Stroke. More than 500,000 Americans will suffer its silent attack this year. The number has epidemic proportions, but add to it the newly estimated 11 million victims each year whose strokes go undetected and America shakes its collective head and wonders, am I next? One third of those detected will die in a short period of time, over 160,000 fatalities, making stroke the number three killer in the US behind only heart disease and cancer. It leaves another 200,000 victims with permanent disability.

In spite of the numbers, brain attack strikes intimately and personally. Its shadow of death spreads quickly over living tissue in the brain, violating personality and disrupting life. This graphic contrast, huge numbers of victims versus the unique intimacy of each stroke, draws into focus the one common by-product of all attacks, fear - fear of the unknown, fear of death or livelihood lost.

The perception is evil incarnate, destroying the sanctity of one's life and home. I know, stroke left me blinded, with short-term memory wiped clean and sensory input distorted and disorienting. Only the divine touch could bring the light of hope into this darkness.

The good news - much can be done to fan this hope into a fire of restoration. The better news - remarkable advancements available today include "miracle" clot busters, surgical procedures that listen to the differences in sounds made by healthy cells and dead ones, probes that travel through the body to apply medicines directly on affected areas of the brain,, and the vision for tomorrow that moves microscopic nanotechnology out of science fiction directly into the brain to both repair and replace damaged brain cells.

Different Strokes... unwraps the fear of stroke, revealing possibilities for healing and hope - hope birthed by the insight of experience and supported by research collected from leading edge resources.

More About the Author

One of the early baby-boomers, I grew up in the era of backyard bomb shelters, the Cold War, Viet Nam protests, bank burnings in the 60s, and the early deaths of classmates who fought in an unpopular war because of the draft, akin to conscription in the days of maritime warfare and piracy. More to the point, though, I learned early on that most of what happens to us, most of what changes us comes down to a decision. Sure, the coincidences of life put hurdles in our way from time to time, but how we handle these or respond to them also comes down to a decision.

One of the most important elements in decision making shakes out as the context for those decisions, like looking out a window at all the affairs of life. The bigger the window, the more of life we see and wiser the decisions we can make. The smaller the window on these affairs, the more difficult to decide where to turn, whom to trust, what path to take, when to act, and why act at all. So, I seek out the biggest window possible, expand my horizons, commit to the only explanation that makes sense of it all. Some folks call it mysticism, some spirituality, others with no comprehension at all call it myth. But I find those who say "there is no God" truly foolish.

You must deal with the claims of God's Word and the reality of His annointed. You must find an honest and intelligent way to accept or reject the claims of Jesus, and you must in no uncertain terms know the conviction of your gut truths. "Who do you say that I am?" is the primary question of all history, and the answer draws us to the promise that All of history will climax in Him. He is coming, he is coming sooner rather than later, and at just the right time in history he'll return.

So, I'm motivated to write as I look out this picture window. Because it's bigger than some, I appear wise or intelligent or charismatic or spiritual, maybe even mystical. Because it's smaller than some, I appear pedantic and small in my own little world. But I encourage you to enlarge your window, expand your grasp, extend your reach, open your eyes to heights and depths and brilliances and nuances that surround your window to be found in Him and His word. There is beauty to be discovered and truth to explore.

Enjoy the Gates of Eden, enjoy the Rod of Iron (2011), and enjoy Guardians of Eden (2013) even as you discover just how much your window truly reveals.
