5.0 out of 5 stars Publisher Review, September 12, 2007

This review is from: A Different Winter (Paperback)
In A Different Winter, James Kanady revives the western with a coming of age story centering on a young man named Luke Jacobs. When Luke is orphaned and finds his way to working on a ranch, he learns the hard facts about being a ranch hand and dealing with the personality conflicts that comes with living so close with so many other men.
When the ranch is sold, Luke finds himself out of a job and in the company of Nate Thomas, a legendary man, who agrees to travel with him to look for additional work. The story chronicles the growing friendship of these two men as Nate shows Luke the ways of the world in 1892 Kansas. When the pair meet up with Nate's old friend Rance Butler the duo become a trio with the pair of older men showing the younger about life, living under the stars and how to shoot a rifle.
Becoming a man in the old west is the central theme in this story as Luke learns from his friends, Nate Thomas and Rance Butler about what it really takes to grow up in the old west. From a naïve youngster looking for a job to a young man searching for revenge, Luke's character develops in a series of stages that keep the reader turning page after page to find out where his adventures take him next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, December 3, 2007
This review is from: A Different Winter (Paperback)
Kanady is a major new force in a field that's increasingly dominated by copycats and mediocre writing. "A Different Winter" is A Must Read.

I hope there will be other novels forthcoming from Kanady. He excells in story telling and character development.

But this book. You will not regret it!
