Viewing stained glass from different angles or in various lights is necessary to discover its many qualities. Likewise, viewing solutions of differential equations from several points of view is essential to fully understand their behavior. Lomen and Lovelock provide an active environment for students to explore differential equations by using analytical, numerical, graphical, and descriptive techniques, and for students to use ODEs as a natural tool for modeling many interesting processes in science and engineering.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This text provides lively reading, with compelling applications, projects, and experiments that supply readers with opportunities to explore the relationship between the parameters in a differential equation and the process it models. Its goal is to teach readers to use differential equation as an investigative tool, not just to verify results. Visual exploration of solutions via slope fields, direction fields, phase plane solutions, and other graphical interpretations are emphasized. Also, graphical and numerical techniques are covered early on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough examples, January 26, 2011
This review is from: Differential Equations: Graphics, Models, Data (Paperback)
Most math books present an idea or theorem then provides a few examples worked out step by step. This book presents the idea in text then kind of explains a problem through text, then moves on. If you're looking for your typical math book, this isn't it. If you're required to use it I suggest also getting the solutions manual, that way you have some problems worked out for you (but not all- the solutions manual does the odd number, but if there are parts to it -like a,b,c,d,e- it will only solve every other part -a,c,e- so be ware.)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Differential Equations textbooks ever, October 11, 2001
This review is from: Differential Equations: Graphics, Models, Data (Paperback)
As a student of Professors Lomen and Lovelock I can say with confidence that this is one of the best Differential Equations textbooks I've worked with. The book clearly explains all the concepts, provides numerous examples, and covers everything that there is to be known. Perfect as a supplement to your class lectures or as a way to teach yourself what you might not have learned in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Deal, September 27, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Differential Equations: Graphics, Models, Data (Paperback)
This book was in excellent condition for the price I paid for it. Normally this book runs around $160 + tax in the regular college book stores, and I purchased it for literally almost 1/3 of that price. This product arrived promptly and was definitely worth the savings lol.
