Book Description

1416600507 978-1416600503 August 2005
Join Carol Ann Tomlinson and Cindy A. Strickland in the continuing exploration of how real teachers incorporate differentiation principles and strategies throughout an entire instructional unit. Focusing on the high school grades, but applicable at all levels, Differentiation in Practice, Grades 9–12 will teach anyone interested in designing and implementing differentiated curriculum how to do so or how to do so more effectively. Inside, you’ll find

* Annotated lesson plans for differentiated units in English, mathematics, history, science, art, and world languages.
* Samples of differentiated product assignments, learning contracts, rubrics, and homework handouts.
* An overview of the non-negotiables in differentiated classrooms and guidelines for using the book as a learning tool.
* An extended glossary and recommended readings for further exploration of key ideas and strategies.

Each unit highlights underlying standards, delineates learning goals, and takes you step by step through the instructional process. Unit developers provide running commentary on their use of flexible grouping and pacing, tiered assignments and assessments, and numerous other strategies. The models and insight presented will inform your own differentiation efforts and help you meet the challenge of mixed-ability classrooms with academically responsive curriculum appropriate for all learners.

5.0 out of 5 stars So useful, July 18, 2007

This review is from: Differentiation in Practice: A Resource Guide for Differentiating Curriculum, Grades 9-12 (Paperback)
I was blown away by some of the ideas in this book. If you are intrigued by the concept of differentiation, but feel like you need more practical guidance than some of Tomlinson's other books offer, snatch this one up. As an English teacher, I found the Macbeth unit plan invaluable. The downside is that only a few of the units are likely to be applicable to any one teacher's course schedule. But even if there is only one unit for your subject area, it's probably worth the splurge. Or, if you don't mind sharing, you could split it with teacher friends who are just as passionate about reevaluating our current practices and doing what's truly best for each student.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the High School Teacher, November 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Differentiation in Practice: A Resource Guide for Differentiating Curriculum, Grades 9-12 (Paperback)
Having study the differential instructional booklets as part of my master's, I could only find materials for the elementary school age. Those lessons were not as useful as you cannot always trust students at the high school level to stay on task and to move into the appropriate group. However, the lessons and the unit plans in this book allows you to focus on the same standards without splitting the groups apart and allowing students to get involve in their learning process. I would recommend this book to anyone who is teaching in a diverse school where the learning levels are spread apart.
