Book Description

Difficult Decisions in Thoracic Surgery: An Evidence-Based Approach describes the recommended ideal approach, rather than customary care, in selected clinical situations. Brief chapters are devoted to a specific question or decision in general thoracic surgery that is difficult or controversial. Although some of the content may be available in major thoracic texts, rarely are such questions posed specifically and analyzed according to the level of supporting evidence available. The chapters contain both evidence-based recommendations and descriptions of surgeons’ personal practices based on their experience and the published literature.

Chapters are organized around clearly identified recommendations, making possible the identification of useful material at a glance. Over 50 different topics are presented, including a review of available evidence and a general discussion of recommended practice.

This book is a valuable reference source for practicing surgeons, surgeons in training, and educators.

Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews:

"This superb book offers what it says on the cover: an evidence base from which to approach difficult decisions ..." (The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2007)

"This is a critical review of the most recent literature on common problems in thoracic surgery. … The book achieves its objective of providing the best evidence surrounding common problems in general thoracic surgery. … aimed at practicing thoracic surgeons, the book is also highly recommended for residents in cardiothoracic surgery for daily reference and preparation for the board examination. … In short, this is highly recommended to all with an interest in the field of thoracic surgery." (Varun Puri, Doody’s Review Service, August, 2008)

From the Back Cover

The second edition of Difficult Decisions in Thoracic Surgery: An Evidence- Based Approach addresses the growing complexity of decision making in thoracic surgery. More than half of the clinical questions posed in this book are new, and of the questions that remain as holdovers from the previous edition, virtually all have been revised and updated. As new technology is introduced, physicians from nonsurgical specialties offer alternative and competing therapies for what was once the exclusive province of the thoracic surgeon. In addition, there is increasing knowledge regarding the efficacy of traditional thoracic surgical therapies. How to select among these varied and complex approaches is becoming increasingly difficult. Concise chapters are devoted to one or two specific questions, or decisions, in general thoracic surgery that are difficult or controversial. The authors identify relevant publications in their selected topics, grade the quality of the evidence offered by those reports, apply that knowledge to objective management recommendations in an idealized world, and then comment on how they personally use the information in their own clinical practices. The book is a valuable reference source for practicing surgeons, surgeons in training, and educators. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.
