5.0 out of 5 stars One of the good sudoku books
These are difficult puzzles! Given numbers range from 20-28, with most puzzles around 24-25. They are not insanely difficult, like puzzles with under 20 given numbers that can take hours to figure out, but they are difficult enough to keep you occupied for a long time...

... at least, not according to Will Shortz's standards. Will Shortz is the editor of the NY Times crossword puzzle and has several Sudoku books to his name. From what I've seen, his books always include a range from "Light 'n Easy" to "Beware! Very Challenging". So far, I've only purchased his books, but since only about 20% of them are really tough, I thought it would be...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice puzzles, October 16, 2005
This review is from: 200 Difficult Sudoku Puzzles (Paperback)
I liked this book, the levels are always relative and I don't think these are supposed to be the hardest puzzles, which suits me fine. I think it would be Easy, Medium, Difficult, Very hard, Fiendish or something like that.

There are actually a limited possible puzzles with only 17 numbers, so when you get down to that few starting numbers it literally can't get any harder. With that in mind, puzzles with 25 starting numbers was exactly what I expected after reading the description of this book.

They don't take an hour to solve though, probably more like 15-20 minutes for most people - but on the other hand the puzzles that first appeared in the newspapers were really simple and this book was written in reponse to that about a year ago. Nowadays people have gotten a lot better at solving the puzzles and so the puzzles in the newspapers are now significantly harder.

According to the last page, there will be a book out soon with REALLY hard puzzles, 18 starting numbers and so on - I'll be waiting for that one! All in all, it's a good book, but not for hardcore sudoku solvers, if that fits your profile I'd recommend the 100 Samurai Sudoku Puzzles instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Board Games Editor at BellaOnline.com, December 11, 2005

This is a great sudoku book as far as "bang for your buck" goes, especially for more advanced sudoku-ers, who may find themselves completely skipping the "easy" or "medium" puzzles in mixed-level sudoku books. The puzzles here aren't impossible, but they are relatively tough, which is nice! Because of the degree of difficulty, this book will take most puzzlers quite a while to work all the way through, again making it good bang for your buck.

From what I understand, all mistakes have been fixed and the book is now in perfect puzzle condition, just make sure you get the second edition (which you will if you buy it at Amazon.... if you pick it up at a bookstore, double-check.).

So far, I've only purchased his books, but since only about 20% of them are really tough, I thought it would be nice to get a book with nothing but the brain-squeezers. Unfortunately, the Sudoku puzzles here all fall into the "Light 'n Easy" category.

A rule of thumb for how difficult a Sudoku will be is how many digits the puzzle starts out with. A really hard one may have 17 or 18. The ones in this book, by contrast, have 25+.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great puzzles for all places, August 13, 2005

I have been suspicious against these puzzles for some time, especially since the sudokus of the newspapers have been of a quite uneven quality for solving when going to and from work.
This book has it ALL! Many quite tricky, but also some that might be suitable after a tough day. Also (not to forget!) - the layout and size is really practical...

Even though I only have try 2 of the 200 puzzles, it have been quite easy. The title is 200 most difficult sudoku puzzles, however I think 200 medium difficult sudoku puzzle is mroe suitable for its name.
