5.0 out of 5 stars Learn from a true NLP pioneer, March 1, 2006
This review is from: Diffusing Reflexive Anger [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Seeing the process that Steve Andreas uses to confirm that the young lady WANTS to change, and then helps her to review her BELIEFS that underlie her anger by itself was useful and instructive. Then watching it again and noticing how he guides her to reconsider those beliefs and directs her in such a way that she will be more conscious of future interactions was the meat of the instruction, the real value of the video. Finally, the belief that she could EXPECT to control her behaviour in the future... very elegant. Excellent video. It's curious that it's no longer available at nlpcomprehensive.com.

This review is from: Diffusing Reflexive Anger [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This tape is part of a series of demonstrations and interviews with practitioners demonstrating various forms of brief therapy. Steve Andreas is arguably one of the best NLP therapists out there. He has written a number of books outlining the principles and techniques of NLP including "Transforming Yourself", "NLP: The New Technology of Achievement", "Change Your Mind, and Keep the Change", and "Is There Life Before Death", among others. I can't think of anyone to better demonstrate how therapy should be done.

In this tape, Steve briefly introduces the methodology of NLP and answers questions posed by a pair of interviewers. He then spends about 45 minutes working with a young lady who has a quick temper. After the therapy session, he analyzes what he did and what indications the viewer can get that the client is changing her perspective.

Steve's approach illustrates various techniques used in NLP such as building rapport (particularly with gentle humor), pacing, leading, the use of submodlaities to change emotional response, and future pacing to check that the change will be persistant. Throughout the therapy the young lady gradually shifts her perspective until, at the end, she is confident that she will have no further outbursts of anger and will respond more calmly to frustration.

I found this tape to be an excellent adjunct to printed material on NLP - even Steve's own works. It is one thing to read about rapport, and quite another to see it done by an expert. I also like that in this session, the client had a problem that is somewhat representative of the type of thing often seen. This young lady knew what she wanted to achieve, but (initially at least) did not see how it related to other things in her life.

I highly recommend this video. I learn more from it each time I view it.
