Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Kids who get starry-eyed over trucks, earth-moving equipment, and construction sites should go gaga over this book, which has a pack of very capable canines scampering around and digging at a construction site. The rhymes on each page are filled with urgency and brawny details (“Down in the pit / there’s some busting to do, / with hammers, a pick, / and a rock splitter, too”). The story spans one day, from waking up at a work-site dorm to the end of the day, when the big reveal of what they’ve been building is made. Horvath’s digital illustrations make the cartoon dogs (and one cat) and the construction equipment pop with bright colors and sharp angles. Both the dogs’ clothing and equipment are presented in loving, kid-friendly detail. And along the way, the dogs make what must be the greatest discovery ever known to dog: a gigantic T. rex bone that’s been blocking the digging. Young fans of Sherri Duskey Rinker’s Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site (2011) better start their engines. Preschool-Grade 2. --Connie Fletcher

Review

"Dig, Dogs, Dig will satisfy truck and dog lovers alike. The energetic, rhyming text is very reminiscent of Go, Dog. Go!, but with a bright and modern look. First-time author James Horvath's vibrant colors and fun, cartoony style make the pages crackle with energy." - Common Sense Media

"A dozen dogs and one black cat work hard to build a playground in this amusing story that will please kids who love excavators, cranes and dump trucks." - Kirkus

Best Books of 2013 - Preschool to Early Elementary:
"A great companion to NY Times Bestseller Good Night Good Night Construction Site, construction truck loving toddlers will love the details in this story about construction working dogs who build a city park. The rhyming text follows the dogs as they eat a big pancake breakfast, work with a variety of earth moving equipment, and even excavate an enormous T-Rex bone. Check out James Horvath's follow-up to Dig Dogs Dig, titled Build Dogs Build, to be released in December. - Kevin Powell - Atlanta Parent Online

"The illustrations and text are a delight! There is so much to capture and enjoy that this book will be read over and over again." - Meridian Magazine

"I can happily recommend Dig, Dogs, Dig. It has real verve, and I think young readers (especially boys) are going to like it...Dig, Dogs, Dig is very fun stuff...it has great boy appeal." - Book Aunt

“With its punchy rhymes and Hanna-Barbera panoramas, Dig, Dogs, Dig hops along with the bouncy effervescence of P.D. Eastman’s Go Dog. Go!.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“Fans of Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site will eagerly dig into illustrator/designer Horvath’s vehicle-centric debut, first in a planned series.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Kids who get starry-eyed over trucks, earth-moving equipment, and construction sites should go gaga over this book, which has a pack of very capable canines scampering around and digging at a construction site.” (Booklist)

“Beginner and experienced construction fanatics and their grown-ups will love this fun and appealing read-aloud.” (School Library Journal)

More About the Author

James Horvath is a children's author and illustrator with more than 16 years experience creating whimsical and compelling illustrations that convey energy and emotion for a wide variety of clients and applications.

James graduated "Looney Tunes Laude" from the venerable school of Saturday Morning Cartoons, and received his advanced degree in adolescent time-wasting from the esteemed University of Marvel Comics. He also honed his skills through more traditional pursuits, such as graphic design and art direction for agencies and Fortune 500 companies, but that's a mere subplot. His quirky and odd collection of award-winning characters hop and grunt across the pages of books, magazines and brochures, and dance off the shelves of retail stores. They've also been known to pop up -- bug-eyed and bewildered -- between the pixels of websites and interactive apps everywhere.

When not scratching and scribbling at his drawing table, James plays with his two young sons and beautiful wife, bangs around on the banjo, climbs trees, surfs and generally has a lot of fun. His children are following closely in his footsteps. Both are currently enrolled in the school of online cartoonery, studying Hanna Barbera 101 and asking questions like, "Who is this Pink Panther cat, and why is he so dang cool?!"

Dig, Dogs, Dig: A Construction Tail, is his first of a series of three picture books from HarperCollins.

If P.D. Eastman's book, Go, Dog, Go! got married to Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site, and they had a child, it would be named Dig, Dogs, Dig. And as wonderful as those parents are, this child would actually be smarter than it's parents and better looking too. We can't wait for the next book by James Horvath to land bedside soon!

In, Dig Dogs Dig," James Horvath created a friendly, energetic crew to "dig into" the multiple tasks involved in building a playground. He narrated their story with intelligent and amusing verse that entertains me as well as my grandson. The illustrations make me feel like I just woke up on Saturday morning 1970. Our family is still discovering new things in the clever illustrations during each reading.

In a really fun way, this story shows: 1.)Hard work and cooperation can be fun, 2.) Anyone can contribute something important to a project, 3.) Everyone can feel fulfilled by doing work that benefits others, and 4.) Life is just darned fun and interesting.

It's a children's book like I haven't seen in a long, long time. I predict it will win many awards and be hailed a classic.

I love this book!! It is a great book for the young boy crowd. Well, I think my daughter would have loved it too at around age 5 or so. My kids are older now, but they would have loved this book and I would have loved reading it to them -- over and over again. The illustrations are so fun and well done and the text is great for young kids who are learning to read. As a former elementary school teacher and homeschooling mom, I know the types of books that kids actually like and pick up time and time again, and this is it. I will be getting more copies of this book for my local library and all my young friends. If you are looking for a very likable, fun and satisfying read, pick up a copy of Dig, Dogs, Dig today. Grandparents should definitely have one of these around! The illustrations alone will inspire hours of interesting conversation with the young ones!

Parents looking for a book they won't mind reading . . . a lot! . . . will find a great resource in Horvath's Dig, Dogs, Dig. Not only does it share of love of all things diggy with kids, the humor is quick and quirky and the text lively. His illustration style is colorful yet nicely reminiscent of animated cartoons with a subtle splash of nostalgia. Adding a fun surprise "find" by the diggers is a bonus. Great to read to kids but also aimed right at beginning readers looking for a comfortable place to do their own digging . . . for words! A+!

Upon receiving and reading this becoming book, I was immediately bedazzled and bemused; beholding the perfect blend of text and graphics I was beside myself with appreciation of the author/artist's work. Half of the children's books I read are bland and desert-dry, trying too hard to teach a lesson. Dig, Dogs, Dig demonstrates what can be accomplished with planning, teamwork. and effort. I'm now looking forward to reading the author's second book that I'm sure will please the bejabbers out of me.

The expansive two page graphics are wonderfully designed and filled with fun details and attention getting color. The use of rhyme works well for young readers and provides some context clues along with the pictures. Minimal text is one reason this book is so successful. It would behoove readers of this review to get a copy of Dig Dogs Dig and share the delight with their favorite youngster(s).

NOTE: Another thoughtful touch is that the dust jacket and hard book cover match exactly. The parent or teacher might want to remove the dust jacket for safe keeping while the book is being enjoyed by small hands.

Often I am skeptical of first time authors, especially when it comes to children's books but this book is fantastic because it engages your child and effectively illustrates the different construction vehicles. You'll find a smooth sing-song, rhyming cadence in Dig Dogs Dig along with beautiful drawings and fun loving character.

Amazon lists the recommended ages of this book as 4-8 but I can say with certainty that children of all ages, from 1 and up (maybe even younger) will enjoy this book.

My two children love this book and, having had lived in Manhattan, our entire family is looking forward to reading the next book in the series Build, Dogs, Build: A Tall Tail!

Some books you read to your kids because they want you to. Other books you read to your kids because YOU want to read it. Put Dig, Dogs, Dig into the latter category. This is the kind of book I would have been mesmerized with as a child. Dogs, a cat to look out for, and lots and lots of construction equipment to ooh and aah over. Fun rhyming and excellent art, the dogs have a life to them that just reads "fun!" Highly recommended for your dog/cat/construction loving kids (and kids at heart)!

The reviewer that mentions the merging of PD Eastman's Go Dog Go and Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site is spot on EXCEPT this book is something that even I choose to re-read over and over to my two year old. The illustrations are great - look for Jinx the cat! and it not only uses key construction terms it explains what terms mean! I can see my son enjoying this book for many years to come! I even bought several copies to give as gifts!
