5.0 out of 5 stars Standout jam band of the mid 1990's, March 2, 2006

This review is from: Dig (Audio CD)
It's quite unfortunate that the following has happened:

(1) I Mother Earth disbanded.
(2) I Mother Earth disbanded after receiving virtually no radio play.
(3) I Mother Earth disbanded after filtering through 2 lead singers, including one of the finest voices rock music has ever heard.
(4) Amazon is not selling this album.

But this is your opportunity to get one of the most underrated cds in rock music for incredibly cheap. Take a chance, buy it from Amazon's Marketplace, and you will not be disappointed.

Edwin & Company (Edwin made this band...not the other way around) provided a grunge obsessed half decade with some of the finest blues/jam/alternative rock...whatever you want to call it, it was (nay, it IS) great music. The tunes are incredibly infectious and catchy. Combined with Edwin's unique voice, IME produces a sound that was literally unlike any other band of the bleak mid 1990's that were dominated by Nirvana & company. Each and every song on this album is memorable, beginning with the instrumental, The Mothers, followed by the more commercially popular Rain Will Fall and Not Quite Sonic, right down to the diamonds in the "rough," No One, Undone and Basketball. The closest comparison that I can think of to a similar band in a similar era would be Candlebox. Songs like Rain Will Fall parallel the style of Arrow off of Candlebox's self-titled first release. But maybe I think that merely because I purchased both albums at the same time. IME enjoyed a certain level of popularity in 1994-1995 opening up for Dream Theater on their world tour, ultimately inspiring a future Dream Theater song. So if you're also a fan of Dream Theater, IME will not disappoint.

Quite frankly, I Mother Earth tops my list of the most underrated rock bands of all time. The brief time with Edwin will stand out as their most popular, most successful period, with Dig standing out as the better of the two releases with their former disgruntled singer (the other being Scenery and Fish...also a fine work). By no means is this album outdated or irrelevant today, in fact, Dig was very likely years ahead of its time. If released today, it may still be the uncovered gem that it was in 1993, or it may have commercial success. Either way, IME's Dig is a true must-have for fans of bluesy, catchy, rock music.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Mother Earth - 'Dig' (Capitol), December 3, 2004
This review is from: Dig (Audio CD)
Highly appreciated sounding debut CD from this Canadian-based four piece.I Mother Earth plays a genre of psychedelic-metal that will put some of us listeners into somewhat of a hypnotic trance.A couple of cuts I thought stood out were the space-funky "Rain Will Fall",the metallic "Levitate","The Mothers" and "So Gently We Weep"(this track sort of reminds me of the Doors "The End").Just might appeal to fans of Orange 9mm,early Korn,Sublime and Animal Bag.Worth checking out.

I stumbled upon I mother earth cassette back in the old days when it first got released. I was at a tiny record store and every often I would check out new stuffs that were brought in by the owner of the store. He had no knowledge of music whatsoever. All he knows was to sell. Me on the other hand... saw this weird looking cover, a dog with an oxygen mask. I was like I Mother Earth??? What is this??? In those old days I remembered, you could test the cassette at the counter and listen to the 1st song briefly... So I brought it to the owner and test it out.. To my surprise this record was an entirely different feel, atmosphere all together... The 1st song was a melodic intro and then blast in with the 2nd song.. I heard this briefly at the store and was like wow!! Alright I want it.. I took a chance not knowing the entire album was good and was to my taste I was mainly influence by 80's hard rock / hair metal type of sound and band. When I got home and listen to the entire album.. it was not bad there was couple of songs which I didn't like because it was entirely different from the hard rock sound that I was used too.... But I gave it chance and grew to love every song on the album.....I can say I was open enough to accept a brand new band with a distinctive sound and feel.... I Mother Earth blended with tons of tribal drumming and sound.. Their song writing was totally different from the 80's hair metal band...I was always seeking new band with new sounds and new talent. And here I am with I Mother Earth.. The best song that really caught me was Levitate, Rain Will Fall, Not Quite Sonic and so forth... It was a blast listening over and over again. And it grew each time to listen to it.. Very melodic in a different way..I also remembered I had played drums a few years back and was really into hrad rock style.. Then when I learned and played I Mother Earth's song I was completely drumming in a different style.. I had to learn so many parts to their songs... It is not the typical hard rock feel anymore but tribal feel to it.... More toms playing instead of snare and kick drum... Also the song Rain will Fall had a double bass parts towards to end.. it was a blast learning and playing it....it had a totally different feel when the snare comes in.. I love it so much.. and now to this year 2005 I can look back and say that I had an awesome time being influenced by I Mother Earth... To those of you who are unsure of this band... What I had to say is just be open.. and listen to the music.. Let the music digest in you and feel it....It stand the test of time!!! Highly Recommended!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The original sound!, June 18, 2001
By
"skulliest" (Edmonton, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dig (Audio CD)
If you are looking for some gritty, blues influenced rock... look no further than I Mother Earth. This eclectic Canadian quartet excels on their debut disc, Dig. Sometimes sounding reminiscient of bands like Santana, I Mother Earth churns out some excellent rhythms guaranteed to get your blood flowing. Songs like 'Levitate', 'Not Quite Sonic' and 'Rain Will Fall' will immediately grab your attention as catchy, fast and great tunes. 'So Gently We Go' is an excellent song that is a slower, more emotional, track. 'Lost My America' is a darker song with a bluesy influence. 'And The Experience' and 'The Universe In You' are both great songs with more blues influences throughout. This is really a phenomenal CD.

You will be surprised to find some unusual sounds on this CD. Some spanish influenced congas and other percussion of the like are played by Luis Conte, who isn't officially a band member, but plays with them all the time, assisting Christian Tanna in his drumming duties. Jagori Tanna's guitar at first comes off as a poor production job, but realizing that Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses) is producing this album you then understand that the guitar is intentionally a dirty, textured tone that just works so well with the gritty, ambiguous quality of the songs.

Unfortunately for us, this is the only opportunity to hear this sound from I Mother Earth. From here, they released the highly commercialized Scenery & Fish. Edwin left the band a while after to start his solo career, leaving the rest of the band to get a new lead singer. They then released Blue, Green, Orange which is an attempt to return to their roots. Dig, however, is the real deal which has yet to be topped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dig This!, June 12, 2001
This review is from: Dig (Audio CD)
Forget Edwin vs. Brian. Forget old I Mother Earth vs. new I Mother Earth. Just remember this fantastic collection of great songs, no matter which singer is performing them, because they may be the best the band has ever released.

This record has an element for every hard rock fan: aggressive riffs, thoughtful lyrics, soul, energy, experimentation, and those now-trademark jams. Though Edwin tends to yell a lot compared to the second album (and his solo debut), he does let loose some melodic stuff now and then, and it all fits the feel of the record. Guitarist Jagori Tanna wrote some of his best work here, and he and bassist Bruce Gordon play so well off each other, the result being some excellent hooks and jams. Though complemented by a pair of percussionists, Christian Tanna does the best drumming of his career on this record, and his lyrics are edgy and tender all at once.

The most important thing that made this record was the hunger involved. These guys were on a serious mission to prove that they could rock out with any band in the universe. If this album was any indication, then the rest of the universe was in big trouble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where artistry and musicianship meet hard rock!, August 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dig (Audio CD)
I Mother Earth's first album has gone back to the roots of rock and roll. These guys know how to write songs AND play their instruments. For the longest time I've been waiting for a guitar player that can really solo his %$* off. If your sick of the typical boring and depressed grunge rock, this album will bring your senses back into the realm of true rock and roll. "Rain will Fall" will knock your ears off and has got to be one of the most drivin and thrivin songs ever to be written. But, not only can they rock with the best of em', they can also write and play to a "softer" rock n roller. A must album for your collection. Amazon- please stock this album!!! I can't find it anywhere!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most amazing bands ever in my opinion., January 13, 2012

Having seen them play back then, i can confirm that Jag was (and undoubtedly is still) not only a virtuoso, but in fact one of the most amazing guitarists of all time. What he did on the guitar seemed unfathomable, even though i am a fairly accomplished guitarist in my own right. The first thing I noticed when i saw them live was how he was constantly adjusting the volume and tone on his guitar. It was truly a never ending process as he constantly controlled the moment. The next thing i noticed was his ability to really shred ala Dimebag if he so desired. However, he did it in a more Hendrix-ish manner. Additionally, he would sometimes play with his pick and fingers simultaneously, and at times would even be playing the guitar like a bass, slapping and popping the strings to produce specific sounds and tones. The way he would put it all together into a seamlessly brilliant wall of sound with Gilmore sensibilities....Truly amazing!
Although that was always my favorite part of their music, the truth is i also really loved Edwin's vocals, Christian's drums and lyrics, Gordon's bass (and later, the percussionist whose name i dont remember, although i do remember he was French Canadian and pretty cool guy to talk to)...they were pretty awesome in their own right as well.

So, all that really combined to produce one of the finest album's ever. This album really defined something indefinable, brought together styles from classic psychedelic and blues, fusing them with the more uptempo style of melodic metal with some heavy funky influence as well. It perhaps more than almost any other album, transcended genre, defied convention, and just went with it. I wish they had seen more success, but i think the very things that made them great also hindered them. It is a more intellectual music than your top 40 bubble music. It challenges you to really listen, to find the character and nuances that define it.

I think you owe it to yourself to give this a listen, then another, and another. Let it wash over you and enjoy the sound as you drift along it current.

Enjoy!

All I wanted was I Mother Earth on my iPod...but for some reason, IME is not on iTunes. The CD came quickly and played with no skipping, so I'm happy. The shipping was a lot though.

Great album. I was only familiar with Not Quite Sonic when I purchased this cd, but this whole album is top-notch. From the get-go of Mothers to the end of Universe, this album is tough to stop before it is finished...every song is a jam. Literally. Too bad these guys never got a lot of love here in the States, but I tell everyone I can about these guys and especially this album.
