A Great Horn,
By
This review is from: I Dig Jonah: Jonah Jones Capitol Collection (Audio CD)
I love this CD. If you like the trumpet you will also love this CD. You have never heard "St. James Infirmary" until you hear Jonah's version. Lots of old show tunes and many selections taken from his earlier albums. This is not the sound of Louie, Dizzy or Al. This is the horn of Jonah and it swings.

I listened to Jonah Jones way back in 1958. I am trying to get all my old music in new forms. He DOES make me want to get up & boogie just like many years ago. He music is timeless and I could listen over & over to his great style! I was delighted to find this album in CD format. Thanks CDNOW, you did it again for me!

This CD is somewhat elusive to obtain, but mine arrived yesterday from Amazon UK. What a fabulous recording it is.
The sound quality is high fidelity, and the program opens with On The Street Where You Live. Jonah never stops swinging from there. One reviewer commented on Jonah's version of Saint James Infirmary. It is fantastic with Jonah on vocals. I happen to prefer the instrumental version done by Wild Bill Davison found on the CD titled 's Wonderful. I highly recommend this Jonah Jones outing. Hop on it, anyway you can. Cheers!!!

One of the finest boogie-jazz trumpeters of all time, Jonah Jones (born Robert Jones in 1909) gives 25 of his greatest performances here, injecting some much needed swing into several old standards that were previously made during times when most music was slower than a snail. Perhaps the best song, however is his own co-composition "A Touch Of Blue", an otherwise instrumental song that glides along a "doot-doot-doot-doot-doot" vocal background that is reminicient of ensembles such as the Ray Conniff Singers or The Spitfire Band.
