not your average punk band,

As far as punk goes, it has its basic sounds. The angry shouting of the exploited, the careless happiness of the Adicts, but trust me whne i say the toy dolls are unlike any punk band you've ever heard. The lead singer Olga delivers some of the most unique vocals to ever come out of your stereo, and instead of focusing on how bad the world is, it focuses on how good we can make it if we try. Now this cd does fall victim to the classic one song you've heard it all virus, but i personally don't mind hearing that sound for an hour. If your ready for a different sound, try the toy dolls, but if songs that make you fell like your in a pub turn you off, you may want to look elsewhere.

I figure that the Ramone boys are (were, R.I.P.) proud that they layed the groundwork for this savage little disc (album, really.)This is some of the most abusive guitar work that I have ever heard, yet it never disolves into a metal-like muddle, always clean and true to punk's more primative rhythms. I do love this album. The vocals are at once silly and appropriate, and the lyrics borderline retarded. I mean this in the best possible way... The silly kid's sing-song intro piece quickly snaps into the dizzying "Dig That Groove Baby," about which I proffer this caution: Listen to the lyrics closely before playing this around your parents. You may be through this disc a coupla times before realizing what a "groove" is. Snicker. The single most entertaining song on this twisted collection is not the beloved "Nellie the Elephant," but the savage "Dougy Giro," which may or may not be about something, but the guitar work is so quick and brutal that you begin to doubt a human hand is at the helm. Dig That Groove, Baby.

You may or may not have heard of the Toy Dolls. Fact is they were one of the first (and best) punk bands from the UK. Their sound can be described as Circus Music Punk. Also, sometimes their songs can become harder and faster. They also happen to be one of the funniest bands Ive ever heard. This album, I think, best represents the true Toy Dolls and is definitely something to check out. If you are interested in something that strays from what people say REAL PUNK ROCK is, this is for you. They simpily took the punk sound and turned it into whatever they wanted. In this case it would be upbeat, catchy, hilarious songs about everything from an Elephant to Back Ache Medicine.

Go ahead - dig that groove...!!,
This review is from: Dig That Groove Baby (Audio CD)
Can't believe nobody has reviewed this album. I understand that it is relatively obscure, but "Nellie the elephant" was a fair hit, and every song on the record is as strong. Hugely catchy, infectious, very pop oriented punk. Also a well recorded album. The singer has been (accurately) described as "Buddy Holly on acid", and that is not a bad indication of the sound of this band. Go ahead - buy this record. Then dig that groove!

This record is truly a classic in my books . If you've never heard any songs by this wacky punk band than this is the album to buy first . If you are a fan of the adicts or the dickies , you will most likely love this album

The best punk-comedy album I have ever heard.,

I bought this on vinyl in 1983 and it is still the best album I own. Olga, Flip and Happy Bob still make me laugh every time I hear them. If you like any of the older punk from The Sex Pistols to The Clash you'll love this collection. And look out Blink 182 fans because eventhough 'Dig That Groove Baby' is 16 years old you'll likely enjoy it more than 'Dude Ranch' :) Lyn Travis

England Goes Punk,

This is better then the political ranting's of the Sex Pistols. The Toy Dolls have managed to mix Chris Rock with Sean Connery on steroids. If your into English comedy this is will be an interesting twist for you.

One listen to "Dig That Groove Baby" will do you more good than years of expensive psychotherapy. It's the most joyous bit of musical chaos I've ever heard.

fantastic punk classic from 1983, the toy dolls evolved out of the early 80s oi oi scene in the uk however they did not sound anything like there counterparts like the buissness, the exploited, 4 skins, cock sparrer or the angelic upstarts, they threw a lot of humor into there songs and made themselves out to be more like a cartoon punk band, fun to watch live and great songs to go with them, of all the oi bands the toy dolls even had a big following in japan in the late 80s and early 90s, they started out in 1979 but no recorded output would be heard until 1982 with the original version of nellie the elephant, on this great captain oi reissue you get some of the tracks recorded during 1982, as for this debut album it is about the best the toys ever did becouse it got them huge very fast, some of the songs on here are some of there best and DIG THAT GROOVE became a whole new trend at this time, this album is as good as A FAR OUT DISC(1984), IDOL GOSSIP (1986 ) & BARE FACED CHEECK (1987) the toys did some good records in the 1990s as well but this was there prime era for me, the 1989 album wackey wackey was ok but lacking and not as spot on as these first 4 where, great band they where!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also lots of energy live.
