Grade 4-8-A look at archaeology: what it is, how it is conducted, important historical figures in the field, and what has been learned from the study of remains of past human life. Basic information on the rationale for searching for the past is included along with explanations of the various methods used in excavation. Concise descriptions of the ancient civilizations of the Middle East, Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Americas put this work in context. The writing, however, is flat, and the columns of text give the presentation a textbook look. Black-and-white and full-color photographs and diagrams appear on almost every page. Unfortunately, they vary a great deal in quality. Dig This! gives its readers more detail than Dennis Fradin's Archaeology (Childrens, 1983), which is for a younger audience, and Joan Anderson's From Map to Museum (Morrow, 1988). It's a serviceable though not outstanding overview of the subject.

Gr. 5-8. The Buried Worlds series, a good introduction to archaeology, leads off with this volume, which shows readers how archaeologists go about their work. Among the topics covered are a history of the discipline, an examination of excavating methods, and a look at several ancient civilizations. The attractive and informative volume features interesting black-and-white and crisp color photographs. Among the other, similar titles in the series are Fired Up! a book about pottery making, and Piece by Piece, about making mosaics. Ilene Cooper
