Book Description

March 30, 1991 9 and up
While spending the summer with their grandmother in San Antonio, Texas, twelve-year-old Nan and her younger brother find artifacts buried in the yard and discover how to use them to travel back through time to significant moments in their family history.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-- While their parents are on an archeological expedition, Nan and Tim stay with their grandmother in San Antonio. They decide to perform their own excavation in her backyard, and discover that the objects they dig up--a woman's shoe heel and an old pipe--transport them back in time. During the journeys, they observe their parents' wedding, almost perish in a flood, and learn quite a bit about themselves and their family. This book has a definite Back to the Future tone to it, especially when Nan and Tim help their parents get away from the wedding reception. In a somewhat unusual twist, the siblings not only tell their parents about their escapades but also take their mother along on the last trip. Griffin leaves open the possibility of additional voyages in future books. Not a particularly original concept, but a good story for readers who aren't quite ready for Hangin' Out with Cici (Viking, 1977) by Francine Pascal. --Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, TX

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!!, May 25, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Dig in Time (Paperback)
This book is about two kids, Nan and Tim, who learn to time travel! By using objects they dig up, and a poem by Tim,they can go back to the time it was most used in. The objects they found were from their "Gramma's" garden. For example, with their dead-Granfather's pipe, they travel back to when their Grandpa was alive. I couldn't put it down! Literally!!! YOU HAVE TO READ THIS!!! (Oh, and by the way, this is kinda' a girl's book.)

Ch.9 - Heated Moments - graphic details of a girl starting her period. Writing makes it seem that a girl's period is something wrong.
