Save your money. The 6th Edition is exactly the same book as the 5th Edition published in 2002, except for the cover. You can buy the 5th Edition (used) on this website for as low as $1.67. Gun Digest should have pointed this out when they published the 6th Edition. I am surprised that such a distinguished publisher would resort to this tactic to make a few more bucks.

There are two editions that Ayoob wrote; the older version that I have (5th Edition), and the newer 6th edition, which is mostly the same, but with some updates. If you want to get serious about handgunning and/or keeping/carrying a pistol for defense, then you should really consider getting a copy, preferably the newer 6th edition. This is kind of the Bible of handgunning. If you've been around a while though, it may be a little bit of a waste of time and money.

Although not all gun nuts are convinced that Ayoob is the most qualified person to write a book like this, I think the information is logical and backed up by real-world evidence. Ayoob has been writing professionally for decades, most of which revolves around self-defense and handguns, and the writing in the book reflects that experience.

The book covers handgun selection (including revolvers, single-action autos, double-action autos, lightweight revolvers, micro handguns, and striker-fired autos (including Glocks), buying used handguns, selecting a defense load, selecting holsters, carry etiquette, shooting technique (including reloads, drawing from concealment, using cover, safety manipulation, "point shooting," and other tactics), "responsible customizing," tips on keeping you out of jail if you have to use a firearm for defense, securing handguns with safes and locks, women and young people and handguns, and it touches on competition.

Different ready positions, point shooting techniques, handgun grasping techniques, and stances are evaluated. Some common mistakes are explained.

The Maxing Qualification chapter may be very useful to those in law enforcement, and those that need to take a qualification course to get a concealed carry permit.

I was very disappointed when I received my 6th edition of Combat Handgunnery. I own the 5th edition, also by Ayoob, and loved it. I incorrectly assumed that the 6th edition would be updated, but as far as I can tell, it is simply a reprinting of the 5th edition. The chapters and text appear to be identical. I could not tell this from the descriptions or reviews that I read on Amazon. It is a great book, but don't buy it if you expect it to be different from the 5th edition.

A disappointment...Ayoob is an awesome author, but if you've already purchased the fifth edition this is almost identical. I own all six and have loved this series as my favorite in the subject. I was so dissapointed when I found out Ayoob just added a couple pages and resold the book as a new edition. Editions 1-5 were always relevant and had a lot to say, but 6 was just a reprint of 5 with a couple new pages. not sure why he didn't write a whole new book like the others always were, however his authority on the subject is without question near the top five in the country.

This is almost the exactly the same as the 5th edition. There are a few pages updated for this edition but very few. So do not waste your hard earned dollars if you have the 5th edition.

However, if this title is new to you; I would recommend it. Ayoob is very knowledgeable and give excellent advice and information. I am a major fan of Ayoob's writing. And this does not disappoint.

Despite the high acclaim this book has already received, I figured I would add a little more fuel to that particular fire- it does merit yet another positive review.

This book is indispensable for gun novices, or people who have just had a small amount of contact with firearms: every phase of the self-defense process, from choosing your weapon, to practicing with it, to using it under stress and even avoiding situations in which you may need to use it, is detailed in an authoritative but friendly tone (if you have a sharp eye, there are a few points where Ayoob dispenses with some choice black humor of the 'beat cop' variety, as well.)

There are a few pieces of jargon in here that I imagine would catch new gun owners off guard, although they are of the type that can be intuited pretty easily (e.g. "dry fire"), or of the type that can be easily found in wiktionary or the built-in dictionaries included on most mobile readers. That aside, I can't think of any point in which I felt that I was left wanting for more information on how to act in 'x' situation with 'y' weapon at hand.

There are also some surprisingly good arguments made about all the still-raging handgun controversies, which Ayoob handles with the same tone I've mentioned above. Even on issues like handguns and female empowerment, which I didn't expect him to argue as passionately as he did, he made very strong points with just a minimum of winking condescension towards the 'other side' of that debate. I haven't read his separate co-authored book written on women and handguns, although my curiosity had been stimulated by the brief run-down of that subject within "Combat Handgunnery."

All in all, a solid outing from someone who really cares for the subject he's writing about, and - that rarest of rare birds - seems to really care for the continued survival of his readership as well.
