Over the lips, past the gums, look out stomach here it comes! You can learn a LOT about the digestive system in this book!,
This review is from: The Digestive System (True Books) (Paperback)
Over the lips, past the gums, look out stomach here it comes! Sounds a lot like a simplistic way to describe the digestive system but in fact it is a very important system. It consists of "six main parts: the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and rectum." Your teeth break down the food, your saliva breaks down the starches and the muscles in your esophagus help push the food into your stomach. Your small intestine continues to break down the food and this is where "most food leaves your digestive tract and enters your bloodstream." What your body can't use enters into the colon where it is solidified and eventually eliminated from the body through the rectum.
This is a "True Book." In the beginning you are shown two sentences, but only one is true. You'll have to read the book to find out which is which. In this book you'll learn about why you belch, why you develop gas, what foods cause gas, the tasks of each part of your digestive system, how the stomach digests food, how other organs assist in the digestive process (liver, duodenum, gallbladder, pancreas), the importance of a proper diet, problems with the digestive system, the importance of proper hydration, what a gastroenterologist does and how long the digestive process takes. This is an excellent, very thorough and well written book on the digestive system. The photographs, illustrations and sidebar materials are colorful and vibrant. The topic isn't one that will make a youngster grab for the book, but is one that will come up in a biology class. There are scattered informative facts throughout the book, a page of "True Statistics" and in the back of the book is an index, a listing of important words and additional recommended book and web site resources. Have you ever gotten "butterflies" in your stomach? This book will tell you why this happens!
