Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This collection of poems introduces 16 hardworking vehicles, from a little street sweeper tidying up the neighborhood to a mighty semi barreling down the highway. In the framework verse, three children are invited to try out the trucks. While the verse concentrates on the accomplishments of each vehicle, the illustrations show the kids (and sometimes their cheerful canine companion) in the driver’s seats. The rhythmic, rhyming verse is expressive as well as informative. The text may be a bit long for the youngest truck fans, but they will be captivated by the lively artwork. In contrast to Slonim’s lovely landscape paintings in The Deer Watch (2013), here his energetic acrylic-and-charcoal pictures animate the industrious trucks, creating amusing facial expressions from headlights, bumpers, and other seemingly immobile features. The final spread gathers all the vehicles together and, with the turn of a page, transforms them into toy trucks moved about by the children. Fun for reading aloud, especially one-on-one. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

This book is intelligent and informative, with craft, rhythm, great art, and entertainment.
—School Library Journal (starred review)

Vestergaard (Potty Animals) offers 16 poetic tributes to big machines and trucks that should prove deeply satisfying to young connoisseurs and the grownups who read to them. ... Slonim’s pictures are rendered in bright acrylics (fire engine red and construction sign yellow prevail) and outlined in appropriately rugged charcoal; their burly cuddliness skews the pages toward younger imaginations.
—Publishers Weekly

A charming set of rhymes... This is a wonderful addition to the bookshelf of any kid fascinated by big trucks. And who isn't?

More About the Author

As a kid, I was a book fiend. I read anything and everything I could get my hands on, including encyclopedias, cereal boxes, and "grown-up" books. I lived at the library, checking out the maximum number of books allowed each week and blasting through the summer reading programs. When I exhausted the youth and young adult departments at the library, I walked to the flagship Borders store and read new books, cover-to-cover, in one sitting. (I was gentle, I promise. And all the books I buy now more than make up for my childhood borrowing!)

When I was eight or nine, I wrote this sentence in my journal: When I read a good book I feel like I'm hiding inside it, watching the story happen around me. This is still true today. When I read a great book, I fall right in and I'm oblivious to everything else.

When I was in college, Jane Yolen, Patricia MacLachlan and Jane Dyer visited my Children's Lit class. I distinctly remember thinking, "That's a cool job!" But it didn't occur to me that it could be my job. I was planning to be a psychologist or teacher. I taught in early childhood programs for many years before I considered writing my own stories. After reading hundreds of books to young kids, I was fascinated by their responses to different books. Why did they love books I hated? Why didn't they love books I loved? What made a good book good? Eventually I started putting my own words to paper, and later, that led me here.

It's actually a little odd writing this biography. As a writer, I'm always looking for ways to improve my craft and better understand the writing process, so I'm intrigued by the personal backgrounds of my favorite authors. But as a reader, I prefer not to be aware of the writer at all. I just want to fall into books, and I don't blame anyone else who feels the same way. I hope readers fall into mine.

We have almost every single construction book made for kids...and this is our new favorite! The pictures are great, but what I love most is how pleasant it is to READ. All of the rhymes work perfectly and are easy to read out loud. I can't stand when rhyming books don't really rhyme. This one is extremely well written! My 3 year old son wants to read it every day. The other very interesting thing that I love about this book is its use of "he" and "she." Half of the trucks are referred to as he...and the other half as SHE. This is the first kids construction book I've ever seen that assumes the trucks might be girls too. Its a subtle thing, but might be important for someone with a little girl who loves trucks...

I liked this book so much that I've already ordered another one as a gift!

We have a lot of truck books in our library, but this is our new favorite! The variety of language is fantastic, and I love the cadence of the rhymes. There's an adorable puppy who appears in many of the beautiful illustrations, which makes it just about perfect in my three year olds opinion.

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old grandson and he loves it. When we see the different trucks out side he explains what they do. I was fun to have him see a cherry picker in the parking lot of Home Depot and knew what it was. Not one of the usual trucks mentioned in books.

It also was cute when he realized the dog was always in the trucks.

This if a fun book and I would recommend it.

One of my 3-year old twins obsesses over forklifts, so I was thrilled to find a page devoted to his favorite piece of heavy equipment (have no fear if your little one loves something else--the book has street sweepers, snow plows, excavators, ambulances, garbage trucks, and more). Digger, Dozer, Dumper has replaced Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site and Little Blue Truck as their reigning favorite bedtime book.

Each machine has an accompanying poem to describe its duties, and the meter and rhyme is superb. I don't mind reading this one---yet. Of course, once I read it as many times as the Little Blue Truck leads the way (as I am destined to do with this new classic), I might feel differently.
