5.0 out of 5 stars There can be no one-line summary
I am normally a "skip-reader". I could not do so with this book. I learned a tremendous amount about the concept of the Vietnam war that was so much a part of my life. I want to know more. Is there another book by this author?

1.0 out of 5 stars improbable plot, shallow, ill drawn characters.
The plot offers some promise, but is so improbable as to suggest the book be classified as a fantasy. While the author draws what is probably an honest-though-sympathetic view of union members, his view of business people is so skewed as to make his portrayal a joke. A heavy handed story that misses. Too bad, it might have been quite good, with a real editor and...

4.0 out of 5 stars Total Dude Book, June 15, 2005
By
This review is from: Digger (Mass Market Paperback)
If you are in the mood for a type of book that is like the typical summer guy movies, this is the book for you. I think the average body count per chapter was 5. I can't remember the last time I read a book that had so many people killed. Also, the whole tunnel system under the town is an interesting idea that every man dreamed of in their youth. Yes, there are some definitive aspects of the book that force you to ignore logic but I didn't mind. Overall, a fun romp totally intended for guys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great adventure, August 9, 1999

Fast paced adventure novel. Has the same type of feeling as Die Hard, but the villian isn't as good as Hans. Great fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-stop literary fun, September 30, 1998

Flynns' biting humor and edgy action, make Digger a read to lose sleep over. Although a bit far-fetched, I was only disappointed that it ended. A refreshingly fresh style.....

4.0 out of 5 stars A thriller!, May 13, 1998
This review is from: Digger (Hardcover)
Except for the premise of three Vietnam Vets being able to dig connecting tunnels throughout the city by themselves over several years silently and without significant equipment and keeping it a secret, which I found hard to accept, the novel is a good read. Interesting characters. Good plot. Good prose. You won't regret this read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!, October 6, 1997
This review is from: Digger (Hardcover)
This is another boonie dog book review from Wolfie and Kansas. We really dug Joseph Flynn's novel "Digger". Ever since the tunnel rats stole the show in Stephen Hunter's "The Day Before Midnight", we've waited for a thriller giving subterranean Vietnam veterans a leading role. Mr. Hunter went back to snipers, but Mr. Flynn has come through with a superb tunnel rat book that has action, a mystery, and some spirituality.

"Digger" tells the story of how some former tunnel rats used the tunnels they dug under their midwestern home town to intervene in a violent labor dispute. We found "Digger" to be truly inspirational. After reading this book, we dug two new tunnels under the fence surrounding our yard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small Town War, January 30, 2010

This review is from: Digger (Mass Market Paperback)
One review was titled "Total Dude Book" and while men that like this genre will probably like this book, so will women who like action & adventure novels.

When John came back from fighting in Vietnam, he started working on building a tunnel in Elk Grove, as small town in Illinois. After his friends, Darien and Gil returned they joined him. Each vet had had another reason that just the common thread that joined most vets together, they had left the war, but the war had not left them. They often joked, saying they were trying to exorcise or exercise their demons.

Darien also felt safer in his tunnel than anywhere else. For Gil, it was his way of remembering the glory of being an elite soldier. John's reason was the guilt over his best buddy being killed and not bringing his body back. They were the only three that new of their underground masterpiece.
Flynn does a great job of blending the town's story, their story, and the labor struggle in short, easy to read chapters. There is a lot of violence, but it doesn't make the story any worse.

I have enjoyed all of Flynn's books and my only complaint is that there are not enough of them. The book could have been better if the charcter had been drawn better. For that reason I would rate this book 4 1/2. (I wish Amazon would put stars that you could fill in 1/4 increments. IMHO, it would help the rating system be more accurate).

4.0 out of 5 stars NEVER A DULL MOMENT, March 30, 2009
This review is from: Digger (Mass Market Paperback)
I have had this book for quite a while & was not in the mood to read it. So there it was when I needed something "different." I didn't expect much so was very surprised that it was so entertaining, full of action & never a dull moment. One of the reviews said it was "a man's book." Not true, although I seldom read "chick books" I don't read many of this type. Now I am at Amazon looking for other books by this author. He did a great job with the action scenes, pretty good love scenes that weren't too long & overly descriptive. He needs to develope his characters more but did fairly well here. Very nice job in all & I hope his other books are as good.
