Format: Paperback
I groan whenever this book comes off the shelf. The plot is lacking and the dialogue is worse.

This is the story of an ego-centric hare and a sly mole--sort of a "Tortise and the Hare" with a twist. The mole (Digger) challenges the hare (Lew) to a race for ownership of the cabbage patch. Little does Lew know, Digger has a Mrs. Digger who acts as a body double to help her husband win the race. Here's the lessons I hope my child didn't take away from this book: It's ok to be deceitful, "Beat You!" is an appropriate phrase to say over and over and over like the moles do in the book, and put-downs are acceptable.

Digger and Mrs. Digger deceive the hare by cheating in a race. That deceit is the only thing my children took away from this book. At the end my son exclaimed, "He cheated mom! He cheated to win!" After discussing that lying to get ahead or win was wrong I asked him what he thought we should do with this book and he said we should throw it away.
