4.0 out of 5 stars One of my 2-year-old's favorites
This is a great book for toddler boys. The illustrations are colorful and fun, and the boy's fascination with diggers certainly rings true. There's also a touching angle about the boy sharing with and teaching his baby brother - a cute little story w/ a nice message. For those who like this I also recommend Dig, Dig, Digging and Emergency! - two great books featuring fun...

Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this is a problem but I have to say something. My son, who is 2.5 years old, LOVES construction vehicles. He knows them by name and recognizes them by sight. When we pass construction sites he can identify the machines because he's into books and videos about that stuff. So you can imagine the disappointment when I say, "We're going to read Digger Man!" and he says, "That's not a digger!"

Which he's right, it's not. It's a loader.

In all the books we've looked at, excavators are called "diggers" because, well, they dig. Loaders take the dirt the diggers make and load them into dump trucks.

So here's this whole book centered upon "diggers" when all the illustrations feature loaders. The text is even wrong as one part the boy says "I will push the dirt and make a big hill" which a digger can't do. I think the author should have used a backhoe as the subject because backhoes can dig AND load. But she didn't.

Yes, this book is meant for pre-schoolers but give them a break, they're more intelligent than that. Do your homework, don't be lazy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very simple book with child-appeal, November 14, 2007

We got this book at the library and my 3 year old boy loved it nearly to pieces. I am looking into getting one he can keep, or maybe giving the library the new one and having him keep the torn and taped one! He has it memorized and "reads" it over and over to himself and his little sister. This book not only fascinates the little "digger men" that like to read it, but also teaches values such as hard work, good maintenance, productivity, and taking care of little brother. Your own little "digger man" will be sure to love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Toddler Book, April 7, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Digger Man (Hardcover)
My almost two-year old son loves this book!!! It is short, easy to read and has great pictures. He has the book memorized and sometimes we just look at the pictures and discuss them. He has always loved construction equipment and big trucks and this is right on his level. The boy in the book has a little brother and it would probably be a good book for someone expecting a second child.

I bought this book for my 3-year-old grandson because he is very into trucks, backhoes, diggers, steam rollers, fire engines, and anything else on wheels. He loves this book and wants it read to him over and over. The story as well as the pictures are just charming. I will probably buy more books along these lines by Kevin Lewis.

As the mother of a 2 1/2 year old who is obsessed with anything with wheels, this was a must have. We had borrowed it from our local library, and once we returned it, he asked for it so frequently that I purchased it for him. It remains one of his favorites!

Illustrations are sweet and simple, and the text is simple as well. Nothing fancy, just perfect for a toddler.

My 2 1/2 year old has every truck/construction book published, I think. This is one of his favorites. He loves to finish the sentences. We recommend this to all the truck-loving readers out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for our toddler, January 9, 2012

I bought this for my 19 month old son, who is currently obsessed with backhoes. It's a great book for him, and he loves me to read it over and over again. Part of the storyline is about how he helps teach his little brother about his backhoe because he is so little. We are about to have another son, so our oldest thinks that is fun too. Great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars helfpful for the imagination!, February 10, 2011

I like this book because it shows how a kid can dream of owning a digger and making something from it. Not only does this book talk about what a digger does, but it also incorporates how the boy plans to make the world a better place by building a park with his digger. Everytime he mentions his digger he incorporates his younger brother into the picture. It is sweet but my son does not have a younger brother so I don't know what he thinks of that part. I do know my two year old likes the pictures of the diggers because we stop to watch these diggers during my morning run.
