5.0 out of 5 stars Digging for Answers: Has Archaeology Disproved the Bible?, February 5, 2000

I found Digging for Answers to be an insightful and useful volume in understanding the role of archaeology in biblical studies. Dr. Brantley explains that the science of archaeology (as is true of any other science), is incapable of disproving or "proving" divine revelation. It does, however, offer fascinating cultural insights into what otherwise might be obscure or confusing texts. A must read for Christian teachers and preachers.

This is an outstanding work. I read quite a lot of theology and apologetic work in particular, and this is one of the most readable that I have ever come across. It should be read by all students taking courses in Old Testament Introduction or biblical archaeology, especially those in liberal colleges and seminaries.

The book lays out the issues clearly, while acknowledging areas of difficulty for evangelical approaches to Old Testament Introduction and background issues. The approach is irenic for the most part, although Brantley does make clear the need to always examine the presuppositions of archaeologists and others working in areas where biblical studies and archaeology interact.

The only caveat that I have with the title at the present time is that, due to its 1995 publication date, there have doubtless been some changes in the disciplines covered, so readers should do some additional reading in more current journal articles for updated information. This being said, Brantley's overall approach can be used as a guide when examining more recent research.
