5.0 out of 5 stars Twenty-fiveyears later, I still can quote many of the lines!
I'm delighted that this book is still in print! I read it over and over when my daughters were small. I enjoyed it as much as they did!

The first description on this page doesn't do the book justice. It's not just about a dog learning how to dig and he digs up the whole town. It's about getting carried away with enthusiasm. It's about accidentally making people...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Story - Page Missing
All in all the book was in fair shape, not good. One page was torn and there was a page missing. To a 1 year old, that doesn't make any difference, but would like this company to be more careful about their own reviews. I read and saw nothing about these abnormalities when I purchased the book from them. Buyer, be careful. Maybe email and ask specific questions before...

I'm delighted that this book is still in print! I read it over and over when my daughters were small. I enjoyed it as much as they did!

The first description on this page doesn't do the book justice. It's not just about a dog learning how to dig and he digs up the whole town. It's about getting carried away with enthusiasm. It's about accidentally making people angry. It's about rescue of the dog inspite of being angry with him. It's about forgiveness. It's also about the dog fixing what he messed up. His ACTIONS SHOW that wants forgiveness and he makes friends with the people (and other dogs) he accidentally made angry. It's about LIFE.

The rhyme, rhythm, humor, and illustrations are great! You can't miss this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT MUCH TO NOT LIKE ABOUT THIS ONE, April 4, 2007
This review is from: The Digging-Est Dog (Beginner Books(R)) (Hardcover)
This is probably one of the best, and certainly one of the most favoriet books(for those who have read it) written for children over the past several decades. The story is simply about a dog who is in a pet store (not a pound as several reviewers have stated who probably never actually read the book) and is purchased by a small boy. The dog, Duke, due to his being in a pet store has never learned to dig. Well it does not take long for him to learn and he does indeed becom the Digging-Est Dog around. Duke does get into trouble! The story is told through the dogs eyes and done in verse. This is a wonderful bed time story book and a great book to read to a class of children. I have yet to find a child who did not like it, which bottom line, is the best indorsemnt for any children's book. The illustrations are great as is the writing. Recommend this one highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite-est Story!, September 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Digging-Est Dog (Beginner Books(R)) (Hardcover)
I loved this book when I was a kid and now my children are enjoying it themselves. The art is wonderful for young children and the rhyme holds their attention well. A good bed time story. "I was the happiest dad who ever turned, to a book from which to read he'd learned. My children are enjoying too, a beloved tale that when young I knew. My mother sat me on her knee so the Diggingest Dog I could see. And now I share the same with three."

When I was younger, my mom gave this book to me and I read it all the time. We moved a few times and could no longer find it. I have since been through college and am a teacher. We have continued to look for the book, even when I worked in a book store, to no avail. We could not remember the author's name. Thank you so much for having this book within your books. It means so much to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Classic, October 12, 2000
By
This review is from: The Digging-Est Dog (Beginner Books(R)) (Hardcover)
Unlike many of the other reviewers, I did not have this book when I was a kid, but I can recognize a true classic when I read one. Its so much better than the vast majority of the books coming out today. My four year old loves this book and it has been instrumental in giving him a great step ahead in learning to read.

I think that's because it has the right blend of plot and humour, vocabulary and rhythm, to engross a child, and just as importantly, to keep up adults' interest so they will not be sick of it after reading it the umpteenth time.

Similar to the Seuss books, but actually better quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for kids!, March 2, 2010

I loved this book when I was young.
It was one of the first books I could read.

Over the years the pages fell out and the book got thrown away.
I recently when shopping saw the book and just HAD to pick it up and read it then and there.
It really brought back to me all the reasons I loved it.

The rhyming is top notch, the drawings are lovely, the story is moving and the ending happy.

I see the low marks are from parents, not people who read the book when they were a kid.
Yes, at one point in the book it becomes very sad. But the ending is happy.

I think the main problem with adults reading this book is they don't see the moral of the story.
For me, I never thought as a kid that the BOY was the one we should relate to.

I always related to the DOG, I think this is something only children do, but also intended by the author since the story is from the DOGS point of view.
When adults read the this book they put themselves in the boys place. So they can't see the moral.
But to me the point of the story is not to show off and only use your talents to do good things for people.
It also shows that if you have a true friend (the boy) then they will feel sad when you are sad, they will try to help you at something you aren't good at, even if they are furious at you for doing wrong they won't abandon you if it really matters.
In fact the dog was in a dangerous situation of his own making! Yet the boy doesn't leave him to his fate. He helped his friend, so the dog knows the boy was a true friend. Which in turn helped me to figure out what friends were good and which friends were bad while growing up. A true friend was always by my side even if upset with me, a bad friend only expected me to be there for them and they never thought to stand by me.

In the end the dog learns to use his talents in a positive way, which I always thought was the point of the story.

I guess things make sense to children that parents often overlook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful & Funny, October 1, 2007
I stumbled upon this book while going to Graduate School. This book made me laugh! I enjoyed this book and will share it with a student I will be working with for a Literacy Project. I would say it is appropriate for the beginning reader (K-1st grade) and through 4th grade (although I'm no expert). There are themes of friendship, perserverence, and triumph for a pooch named Duke. I highly recommend!

I remember this from when I was little (born in 66) and loved it. I had to buy it for my daughter and now it's her favorite too. He learns from scratch how to dig and then gets a little too enthusiastic. Once he realizes his damage, he digs it all back in place.

Also bought- The Five Chinese Brothers. One of my other childhood favorites. Though seemingly a little out of sorts with political correctness, it's a good story about quintuplets who get a wrongly accused brother out of trouble by using each of their great talents. One can hold his breath for a long time, one can stretch his legs extra long, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Digging-est Dog, February 19, 2001

There are many reasons why I believe this book, "The Digging-est Dog" is a great book for kids. One of the reasons are because of the type of words it uses. This book uses wonderful words kids would be able to understand. When I was a kid I just loved this book because of the adventure in it. That is another reason why "The Digging-est Dog" is a good book. It tells a story of a dog digging to many places and it goes to the most unusual places a normal dog would dig too. This book is a great book for kids and I would recomend it to anyone. When I was litte I would cry when it came to the part when the little boy didnt want the dog anymore because it dug to, to many places and got in trouble so the master of the dog sent him back to the store and the dog was depressed and unhappy all day long. In this story the kid was happy that the dog tried to dig because before he didn't know how and none of the other dogs wanted to play with him because he couldn't dig. This book shows a good example because the dog never gave up and tried his hardest to reach his goal and achieved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids reallydig this book., March 30, 2000

I don't remember this from my childhood, but mychildren sure like it. It is a great bedtime story book.

When Ifirst saw this, I thought that it was a immitation Dr. Suess, but I then realized that the style is a little different, not as silly a Suess. The book is about the same size as a Dr. Suess story.

The story is about a dog who has lived his whole life in a petstore, and he is rescued by a boy who buys him, and takes him home to the coutryside. The dog is happy to be in the country, but sad since he can't dig because he has spent so much time in the petshop on the hard cold floor. He soon learns how to dig, and gets into lots of fun trouble.

My son loves to laugh at the crazy things that this dog does.
