This review is from: Digging Up Dinosaurs (Paperback)
Jack Horner is a provocative thinker, one who can reach all sorts of fascinating conclusions through his careful yet open-minded examination of the fossil record. In this book, aimed at children, he shares his boundless enthusiasm and palpable glee for all things dinosaurian. At the same time, in a clear and simple voice, he teaches solid facts. He never talks down to children; but rather he explains complex ideas (permineralization, for example) in simple form. Although Dr. Horner draws from a world of knowledge about dinosaurs, his focus is clearly on the dinosaurs of Montana. The cartoons, I suppose, help make this more child-friendly, but they were my least favorite aspect of the book.
I'd recommend this book most for children who are a step beyond the "oooh" stage and are actually interested in the science behind the amazing creatures. My seven-year old loved the book and Jack Horner is his favorite paleontologist. He's written several good books, both for children and adults. |
