Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- An entertaining fictional introduction to the techniques of modern archaeology. This account of two boys who come across interesting items in the woods familiarizes readers with many of the basic methods used by archaeologists and researchers excavating a site. The project begins when Damien picks up a piece of blue glass. His mother, an archaeologist, informs him that the glass is possibly quite old. Further investigations by Damien and his friend Joe turn up more intriguing clues until a full-scale dig is under way. Damien's mother instructs the boys in proper techniques, providing definitions and explanations of terms such as "datum point" and "strata." She even intercedes with the local authorities to make sure that the dig has their blessing. As the dig progresses, the boys discover that they are excavating a rubbish dump used by a 19th-century farm family. Serviceable black-and-white drawings depict some of the techniques described (such as laying out a grid for digging) and the artifacts unearthed. A useful presentation of an oft-misunderstood science. --David N. Pauli, Missoula Public Library, MT
