OK, I own one of these babies. 5 stars, not one less. First of all, you're not comparing this to one of the more expensive effects (e.g., Morely). It wouldn't be fair. Morely and the others cost lots more. The RP80 street prices for $79 and you're just not going to find more features for any less money. That said, it's not just the features. There are 11 amp...

2.0 out of 5 stars Sound crappy and cheap
Don't buy this since I sold mine rightaway. If you're a new buyer and stil want Digitech product, get the RP250 instead. A lot better sound. But if you want a better tone, get Zoom G2.1u, it's a steal.

There are 11 amp presets. I thoroughly like my Crate GS60, but now (thanks to the RP80) I've got a vintage Fender, and what sounds like a Beatle Vox... so, I'm capturing sounds I've never been able to before. Next, there's more effects than you can shake a stick at, like my favorite tremolo for early 60's effects, and phaser, shifter, flanger for crazier sounds. OK, there's more... at least 30 different drum patterns that really do help develop timing and rhythm... much like a metronome, but much more fun.

I bought the RP80 to add some pizazz to my home jam and practice sessions. It definitely adds pizazz. I love it. The effects are awesome, the presets provide instant access to a wide variety of syles that will keep most players satisfied for a long, long time. That said, it needs to be pointed out that the RP80 almost assuredly was not targeted towards professionals. If you are a real professional, the buy what the pros are using. If you play for fun, buy the RP80. The RP80 is for the rest of us who are satisfied with Strat & Les Paul copies and play music for the enjoyment of it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Value!, November 27, 2004

Well you couldn't get more pedal for your dollar, that's for sure. This pedal gives a crisp clean sound that makes even the cheapest amp sound fantastic. I only have two qualms- 1. The expression pedal is not ideal (not super-controllable) and 2. The drum machine kind of blows (most beats are absolutely useless) BUT, I love the sounds this thing makes. Great distortion, phazer, reverb, auto-wah. Just awesome. You'd spend several hundred bucks lining up multiple pedals to get the same sounds this thing gives you for less than $80. A terrific product.

4.0 out of 5 stars See my review for the RP50, February 4, 2005
This review is from: DigiTech RP80 Multi Effect Pedal
(After you read the below, please click on "See All My Reviews" to go to my review on the RP50, which I give 5 Stars and recommend over this product.)

I've had a few students and parents asking why I'm not recommending the RP80A over the RP50 since there is only a $20 difference and the 80 comes with a pedal, power supply and more presets, patterns and user-definable patches.

My reason is pretty simple: I recommend the RP50 to *all* of my beginning students. I have found that the expression pedal becomes a distraction from serious practice. Students, especially younger students, become caught-up in goofing with the pedal, pretending to be Hendrix, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with having fun...that's why we're all here and playing the guitar!!! It's just that I think my students will have more fun much sooner if they get the basics down and my reason for recommending the RP50 is because I think it helps students get the basics down faster than they would with just a beginner amp. (See my explanation of the benefits in my RP50 review.)

This is not to say that the 80 is a bad product. I am pleased DigiTech is including the power supply and wish they would with the 50! If you're already an intermediate level player or above, then by all means, this may be the product for you versus the 50, although I agree with the 2 reviews above in their assessment of the pedal. However, at $79 it's not going to be a Morley. I think DigiTech's packed quite a lot into this for the price and we can't be too critical of the pedal's limitations. Maybe they'll read these reviews and fix that on v2.0!

4.0 out of 5 stars more bang for your buck, January 25, 2005

This review is from: DigiTech RP80 Multi Effect Pedal
this little baby is unbeatable for its versatility in its price bracket. the range of tones and effects is great. i have found a number of great tones and effects combinations that i used routinely. my only gripe is the expression pedal. it's sufficient for most things, but it's useless for any kind of controlled wah. that's an instant star demotion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its the best, October 24, 2006
This review is from: DigiTech RP80 Multi Effect Pedal
This is the best thing other than the guitar and the amp that i've ever gotten. I barely know how to use it, and i love it so much. It's very user friendly. And, it comes with every effect you'll ever need, want, or even have heard of. And you can creat your own settings. Its the best thing you can buy, and for a very big bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, January 14, 2006
This review is from: DigiTech RP80 Multi Effect Pedal
I just bought this thing today, and I have to say, it is amazing. At first I thought it would be disappointing, but after I figured it out, I can't get enough of it. I played for about 3 hours straight, and I'm probably going to go play now. I don't get why people don't like the expression pedal.. It sounds very good to me

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product for the home player, March 27, 2007
This review is from: DigiTech RP80 Multi Effect Pedal
I got my RP80 a couple years back, and it blew me away. For such a low price, you can't ask for any more. Effects are great with few flaws.

The distortion really isn't great for modelling a marshall amp, for example, but the rectos are sweet. The whammy was a bit off sometimes. The buttons finally started malfunctioning after about a year and a half (getting hard to press; it had a rough life, though), and the sound was not as good as, say, a more expensive processor, but for $80, I consider this top of its class.

The instruction manual is helpful; read it. The RP80 is very user friendly, and is great for beginners or intermediate players who just want a cool sound to mess with. If you are going pro, don't pick this one.

Best value, great processor, easy to deal with. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I Need and More, March 11, 2007
This review is from: DigiTech RP80 Multi Effect Pedal
This is an excellent product for someone just getting into mult-effects, like me, at an intermediate level, or who just wants something inexpensive to kick around with at home. I spend hours playing guitar and fiddling around with the effects on this little guy. For those who complain about the limitations and construction, come on, this is an $80 item...what did you expect? These guys need to be looking at multi-effects items costing $300 and up. You aren't going to see a roady for the Rolling Stones setting up one of these on stage. I tried out a $500 effects board at a local store and got some truly mind blowing sounds and the constructions was primo but, for where I am right now, this baby will do fine. When I play guitar well enough to warrant buying a Gibson Les Paul then I'll be ready for the $300 and up multi-effects boards. Do not underestimate the terrific and dazzling effects you CAN get with this item because there is a LOT you can do with it. You'll even impress yourself when you hear yourself play! I know I did.

This is worth every penny. Granted, it doesn't cost a lot of pennies. That's why I say you can't go wrong on this thing. My first signal processor (1991) was more than 10 times this price and it didn't sound any better. I am amazed that all these effects are within the reach of the average musician (I had to take out a loan for this sort of thing when I was a kid).
