4.0 out of 5 stars Don't get me wrong! This video is excellent!, June 26, 2002

This review is from: Digimon - The Emperor's Last Stand (Vol. 7) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It was supposed to be for my son. But I have to confess that I became hooked to it. Digimon 02 is an excellent series, you will be so emotionally involved. As far as rating this video, I had to take away a quarter star for some transulation errors. I had seen it in original Japanese version first. To transulate it in English, they usually do pretty good jobs cutting out too cruel/violent scenes, add jokes here/there to lighten things up, and change contents slightly to better suit American audience. In The Crest of Kindness, before Wormmon sacrifices himself, he says "what happened to that sweet kid who had a dream to take over the digital world....." In Genesis of Evil, after Sam's death and receiving the e-mail, Ken comes to the dark sea in digital world and says "I'll never forget the first time I saw the digital world. It was enormous..."
But from my understanding watching the original Japanese version, those two lines are not quite right. First time Ken went to digital world was when Sam was still alive. Ken took the supposed Sam's digivice from his drawer and went to digital world. Ken had no intention of taking over the digital world
After Sam's death and receiving the mysterious e-mail, Ken went to the digital world again. It was his second trip when Ken arrived the dark sea, possesed by dark thoughs and became the evil Digital Emperor. Ken whom Wormmon loved is referring to kind and gentle Ken at his first visit, not after he became the Digital Emperor to take over the digital world. It makes more sense this way. The English text I mentioned above were confusing. You have to watch the vidoe and see what you think.
I also took off a quarter star for inconsistency of pictures of main characters. Maybe not too much in this video, but in the TV series, drawing (especially children's) changes slightly from episodes to episodes. In some episodes, children are just too disfigured to look like their age. Davis and Ken are supposed to be in 7th grade. (In Japanese version, they are 5th graders.) But, even so, the kids sometimes look too childlish with big heads and puny necks/shoulders.
Don't get me wrong though. This is still a great video. It contains pretty deep stuff - emotions, meaning and value of life, etc. Ken is my favorite character. I watched this tape many times just to see Ken.
To sum up, despite of its childlike appearence of pictures,
I will recommend it to a little older audience. My 1st grade son thinks digimons are cool and he likes to watch them digivolve. But I think he's gotta be a few years older to really appreciate the story, emotional plays between characters and underlain messages.

5.0 out of 5 stars This beats pokemon all the way., June 28, 2004
This is probaly the best out of the whole season. When season 2 came on I coulden't wait to watch every episode. It's pretty much my favorite. Anyways watch it this espically if your a really big ken fan...

Now. I just wanna say even If the name sounds like "poke mon" Theres a huge difference between digimon and pokemon! I used to think that too when I heard about the show but then I realized that it was for more than the name and cute little animals.

Well, I just wanted to make that point... but anyways I really liked this and it's worth the money.

Like most people say I really like the ken sage. It's very dreep and emotional. If your like 7 maybe It's just cool but when you get a bit older watch it and youll see the real meaning of the whole thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This should put to rest all comparisons with Pokemon..., May 25, 2002

I started watching Digimon about the middle of season one, if only because my son watched it and we only have one television in the house. I find it a lot more emotionally involved than Pokemon, with more emotional subtext. Seson two was EXCELLENT, and these episodes prove it. Watching Wormons sacrifice and Ken's transformation was a truly educational experience for my son. Like an earlier reviewer I would love to see all the episodes involved in "The Battle for Both Worlds", possibly the best mini-series I have ever seen, on video or DVD.
