I own this product and it is currently in the garbage can right now. I have called Ergo and they admitted that this product is or can be faulty. I have the large feeder and watering station. I actaully am on the second feeder since the gears in the first one got striped due to the timer not shutting off. This time the timer started to flash numbers between am and pm and then go in a count down. I reset it several times and each time I plugged it back into the wall outlet (different ones as well) it went back to 88:88 and started going all disco again. I can not recommend this timer. There is apparently a defect but they haven't bothered bring their product quality up to speed. The large feeder also has issues which I won't go into here.

The good: This timer worked for about 2.5 years. Battery backup, one outlet on the timer, one outlet always hot. Programming wasn't bad, and it allows you control down to the second.

The bad: It did lose time, slowly. After about 2.5 years, it stopped working. It still ran on battery power, but not while plugged in.

Honestly, 2.5 years of daily use is a decent lifetime for a $25 product. I guess I can't say I was ripped off. I didn't call the company, as it just seemed to easier to get a new one.

This time, I bought an Intermatic for the same price.

Conclusion: Ergo Systems products never work like intended. If someone asked me what kind of timer to buy, I'd point them to Intermatic.

I originally received this timer because it came with the Auto Pet Feeder Size: Medium (10 lbs). Over the course of 5 years I had 3 and they would just stop working. I didn't realize I could use any appliance timer so I kept buying replacements from Ergo at $25 a pop. When I finally found out any appliance timer would work, I went with Woods 59377 Digital 7-Day Lamp/Appliance Timer with 2 Outlets, Up to 8 On/Off Settings per day and Battery Back Up, it has all the same functions and is a sleeker design. Not to mention it was over $10 cheaper.

I would not recommend this timer to anyone having had 3 of them.

Same thing happened to my timer as the previous review. We even had the Time Plugged into a heavy duty surge protector.I called Ergo, and they said that I would have to buy a new one ($25. + shipping) since it had been a year. I asked them if they had common problems with the timer and they said no. They were obviously not being truthful.DON'T BUY THIS TIMER! IT DOES NOT LAST!

Timer started turning on by itself automatically and would not shut off, happens intermittently. Not sure if resetting helped or not but after resetting, it will be ok for a few days then it'll start again. I only use one program to feed once a day for 4 minutes. Couldn't figure out how my dog started gaining weight all of a sudden, now I know. I'll buy another timer but definitely not the U8 model.

Mine also broke after about a year. The feeder is the best one I've found, but the timer is junk. Has anyone found another timer that allows you to control the exact second something turns on? The ones I've found only control to the minute. Unfortunately this is the only one I've found that controls to the second.

As soon as you take this out of the package, push in the little reset button using a bent paperclip. This is incredibly annoying, but I guess no one at the factory or the warehouse or the retailer can do this for you. Nor can whoever writes the instructions explain this as step 1.

I have two of these and after 7 years one of them broke. The symptom is that everything appears to be working, even the little "activated" light...but nothing happens and no power comes out of the output (not even testing with a voltmeter). This is because the timer needs a reset.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't know this so I bought a second one. Now I have two. So I'm slightly annoyed but to be fair, the first one has given me 7+ years (I bought it in Mar 2006).

What makes this timer great are two things:
1) You can set up to 8 different times using almost* any combination of days
2) You can set up the timer by the second. This is one of the VERY few timers that supports second timing.

The downside is that it's a little bit fiddly; it may take you quite a few tries to get setting it down, but once you do, it's simple to adjust. Unfortunately--like an old alarm clock--you can't go backwards when you pass the time you are looking for. But that's not a big deal because most of us will leave this set once we have the times we need.
If you need to reset the timer daily** don't select this product unless you require a second timer. If you have to mess with it a couple of times a year, then it won't be an issue.

Another downside is that this will take up a whole outlet. But they've made up for that by giving you a second "always on" output on the timer, so you still end up with two outlet spaces.

The only timer I have found which allows control down to seconds. This is needed to control a pet feeeder. Works well, but the LCD display is hard to read in direct sun.
