5.0 out of 5 stars Tasteful, August 15, 2007
By
Alex Bluesummers (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
I also bought this book at Siggraph 2007, and am very impressed with my purchase. This is a tasteful and extensive collection at a very reasonable price. Section titles include Fantasy, Characters, Scenes, Cartoon, and Sci-Fi images. Each of these broad categories contains about 15 sub-sections that each focus in on one specific art piece, with several pages of in-progress work and discussion by the artist. Sections vary in length from 4 to 6 pages. Some are even longer. There are a few more 3d works than 2d, but this distinction is hardly noticeable.

The supporting 3d images include clay renders, wireframes, scene screengrabs (with lights, alpha planes, and other techniques displayed), and sometimes UI screengrabs. Supporting 2d images include reference images used by the artist, pencil sketches, and sometimes idea development before actual production began.

Unlike many other books, the binding of the Digital Arts Masters is surprisingly hardy. It has heft. I feel comfortable reading it without worrying about pages detaching from the spine.

I would recommend this purchase to those looking for some inspiration and technique ideas. After feeling a little frustrated with Ballistic publishing, I'm glad I bought this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immense wealth of experience from over 50 artists, February 26, 2009
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
Length:: 0:29 Mins

The illustrations in this book shouldn't be unfamiliar if you're a frequent visitor of 3D Total. The artwork can be found in the art galleries over there.

This book has compiled the working processes of more than 50 artists. It is not a step-by-step tutorial book and it doesn't focus on any specific software. But the frequently used software are 3D Max, Maya and Photoshop. The art techniques used by the artists can be easily achieved using similar software.

One illustration from each artist is chosen. The workflow of creating the illustration is then explained in first person by the artists. They talk about the challenges, tips, techniques and inspiration they have. For example, on the subject of creating realism in scenes, different artists will take different approaches. All these are discussed non technically that every reader should have no problem following.

The book focuses heavily on 3D art. However, there's a small section with several artists featured on 2D digital painting as well. For 3D, you'll read about things like how textures are applied, how lighting is handled, the different approaches to modeling etc. For digital painting, it's basically on the process and how they achieve the look they planned out in the concept stage.

This book is highly recommended to 3D and digital painting artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, February 5, 2008
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
This is a great book, lots of artwork. Granted, about half of the artwork you could find with a quick google, but its nice to have something real that you can hold. Its also great for the upcoming digital arts apprentice like myself who wants to see how other people's art came to life.

This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
I received this book as a Christmas present about 7 days ago, and havent put it down since. I find myself reading and re-reading the artists procedures and techniques, many of which I plan to try and incorporate into my own workflow. All of the images are masterpieces and have inspired me greatly. Anyone interesting in the realm of digital art, from seasoned artist to novice, should pick this book up for your personal library, you wont be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book but a few minor issues with delivery....., August 23, 2007
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
This book is fantastic! I received mine yesterday after waiting so long for it only to find out that the front cover had scratches all over it? I mean you think if you order a brand new book it would be in perfect condition. Well not in Amazons case. Anyway I emailed Amazon about the condition I received my order in which I wasn't very happy with so they gave me the option to refund my money or re-order a new copy and I get to keep the one I already have! So I must say although the delivery of my book was damaged, Amazon are very good with their customer service base. Kudos to you Amazon. I'll definately keep ordering product from you. Cheers

5.0 out of 5 stars A must own for anyone interested in Digital Art!!, August 12, 2007
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 is simply awesome. It's a great collection of some of the best digital art in the world, coupled with commentary from each and every artist. The provide their initial inspiration for their piece, and the workflow they used to achieve the results. What you get is a great combination of art gallery meets tutorial.

I was lucky enough to get this book for $25 @ SIGGRAPH 2007 in San Diego, however it's worth the $65 it normally sells for. I actually can't believe I got it at such a price. The hardcover is of great quality, and the book is nicely laid out. There are 60 pieces of artwork featured, as well as more pieces from each artists portfolio. It even gives a complete list of all the artist's email addresses and personal websites in case you want to contact them for more info.

All and all, a great book...buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!, July 29, 2011

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
The work done in this book is truly done by digital art masters. This volume includes a mix of both 3D and digital paintings, though more works being done with 3D (But since the book was published from 3D Total, this is understandable). For each of the showcased artworks, there is detailed information about how to achieve certain effects, which is very valuable for any 3D artist. Each artist has their own way of going about a project and it is great to be able to what and how they are thinking during each part of the process. There are also great images that show the wireframes, texture maps, and each of the rendering passes that were composited into the final images. Likewise for digital paintings, there are sketches and the artist also talks about the design decisions that led to the final image. Overall, it's great inspiration for aspiring artists because once you know how it's done, you know it's not impossible.

4.0 out of 5 stars very large selection of artists, November 23, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
This book was purchased for my daughter, an art major. She has looked at it in detail and determined that it doesn't quite serve her purposes. She is interested in game design and felt that there was a limited amount of examples. She did agree that there are many outstanding pieces of digital art in the book, just not what she needs.

I've looked at it as well and noticed many examples of the steps the artists took to construct their images. Also, it's an international group. I'm fairly up on the major digital artists, but I didn't recognise any of the names, which shows the level of talent out there. If you're a digital artist, I'd recommend this for your library

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible illustrations, great artists!, September 19, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 (Paperback)
Digital Art Masters Series has always been a fascination for me, and now that i've had the chance to actually look through the pages of this awesome book (and Vol.3 as well) i can honestly say it was worth the wait!

More than a how to, these books focus on the overall process for artists to create their pieces. Their inspirations, their work flow, their tips & tricks to come up with unique and original ideas that have never been seen before or how they can transform something old into something completely new.

This is a great buy on its own but if you have the money, buy both Vols, you won't regret it.
