Excellent way to get started,
By Terra (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Digital Communications: Design for the Real World (Paperback)
I'm a first year computing student taking an entry level networkings module. For the first month or so, I had quite a bit of problems understanding the concepts in the course. My problem was that I couldn't understand the lecturer, and the reference books that I borrowed never seemed to cater for new students like myself. I chanced upon this book, and it's only been a day since I've got it, but I feel that 90% of the concepts I couldn't understand have suddenly become clear to me. I find that I can now understand the books I've been trying to read but with no success, with the basic knowledge I've gained from this book. I'd definitely recommend this book to any first/second year university student.

The book is NOT good for engineering students,
By discirm@aol.com (Maryland. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Digital Communications: Design for the Real World (Paperback)
As a graduate electrical engineering student, I recently purchased the book. After reading the content and using the CDROM that came with the book, I was disappointed. The material is more for a high school student than a engineering major. The only thing the book have going for it is the way it presented the topics on a browser. It looks pretty but doesn't go far enough in explaining theory, or cover all the other needed material (equations, concepts, etc.) that you would need in order to be useful in a engineering class. External web links to the author's site are no longer there or not updated. I seen better details presented on free websites. The book is over priced for what it gives you. If you are looking for MathLab related algorithms, this book does nothing for you. MathLab is use for some examples, but the book doesn't show MathLab related algorithms and the MathLab files that are given, are poorly commented.

At last a book that gives it straight,
By Tim Jenny (Vancouver, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Digital Communications: Design for the Real World (Paperback)
I would not normally be bothered to give a book review, but in this case I make an exception. This is a superb book for anyone wanting to get going on the digital communications band-wagon. It does not try and impress you with mathematics, nor does it oversimplify the topic. I read it from cover to cover in one go which makes me a sad person I suppose!Go buy it - if only to encourage the author to write on other topics.

Good book but just for concept,
By Paul, San Diego State U. (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Digital Communications: Design for the Real World (Paperback)
This book is good for someone who needs concepts of Digital comm design or modem design. It is very easy to read and understanding but not very helpful for practical design. Like I said, it is good for a beginner, i.e., junior or senior year. It will not fulfil graduate student requirement.

let you get the whole picture quickly,
By Jack Sun (Taipei,Taiwan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Digital Communications: Design for the Real World (Paperback)
this book can give you a quick and still informative review about signaling,filtering,modulation...along with lots of graphs and up-to-date examples, the CD included is basically the same as the book content except some Matlab code and animations(not as helpful as you may think),not bad but can only have 20 personal bookmarks . you can get a system-wise picture while not falling into many mathematics detail that you may encounter in traditional textbook , but if you want to implement something real , still need some rigourous book.

Digital Comms explained without too much theory!,
By James G Gall (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Digital Communications: Design for the Real World (Paperback)
I had been looking for an introductory book on digital communications that I could use on my training program which did not smother everything with Math. After many futile purchase, someone recommended this book and having read it I feel that I should recommend it more publically. This is a great book for introducing professionals to Digital Communications in a short space of time. The digrams used are clear and interesting, the text is punchy, and well written. I now give a copy to each of my delegates who also have found it extremely useful. I would encourage the author to write on wider topics

avoid if you can!,
By
This review is from: Digital Communications: Design for the Real World (Paperback)
Having used this book extensively during communication classes at university, my advice would be to avoid it if you can because ALL the answers provided to the exercises are wrong!! Once you think that you have grasped the theory and want to practice you will first notice that you are never able to get the answers right, after trying for an hour or more you will speak to your tutor about it and realise the book is completely wrong! And I must warn you that this will not happen once or twice, it will happen to about 50% of the exercises or more throughout the book. Which will make you lose a lot of time, other than that, quiet honnestly the theory is well explained with simple diagrams and examples. But still, try to find something else.
