Product Description

While others may dream about making a WiFi router this small, at Zuni Digital we have managed to combine three devices into one small package. Whether you need a wireless N router, a WiFi extender, or a wireless bridge, the ZR301 has you covered. This router creates a high-speed wireless network that is ideal for laptops, smart phones, tablets, and e-readers to use. The stealth design makes this router the perfect choice for homes, apartments, condominiums, and any other location where space is at a premium. Devices equipped with embedded WiFi seem to be everywhere, making a robust wireless network a necessity. Even with the most powerful WiFi routers, reliable wireless signals can be difficult to obtain within some areas of homes or offices. Does your iPad work in your bedroom? Or bathroom? In the back yard? It’s simple physics really - as a digital signal travels through walls, floors or even the air, it gradually gets weaker. This is especially true in homes and offices with multiple floors and thick walls. To solve this problem, we have created the ZuniConnect ZR301 which grabs the existing wireless signal and then sends it off again at renewed strength to a greater range. Your existing WiFi router will continue to act as your network router, and the extender will simply boost the signal. Now you will have eliminated dead zones, and ensured a smooth steady signal for streaming media.

To do so, plug Ethernet into the LAN port, leaving the WAN port unconnected.

If you don't join anything to it, it shouldn't show up on a scan (hidden SSID's show up to scanners when there are nodes using that connection).
Kevin
This unit is very compact, so it doesn't take up much room in the travel bag.

===== Update 03/26/2013 =====
I own this AP for almost a year now, here's an update .....
- As an access point, it's super reliable. It's always stable whether it's in 70F or 95F environment (24/7 operation). (Wireless connection is much more reliable than much-hyped EAP350)
- VLAN support is broken. You can put an SSID into a VLAN, but tagged wireless traffic never show up on LAN side. (Used wireshark to verify that). Zuni Digital wasn't able to provide any useful support.
- Never tested it with radius server. Never used it as a router. Therefore I can't comment on 802.1x, QoS, bandwidth throttling.

===== Original Review =====
This is a newer generation of a pocket router that has many great features that standard routers may not even have. As you may have read from other reviews, this router is tiny.

There are three modes that you can use with this router :

1 - Wireless Access Point or Router :: Allowing you to create a wireless connection from a wired network
2 - Wireless Extender/Bridge :: Extends your wireless coverage and/or make your wireless connection available on both ethernet ports, allowing devices without wireless adaptor to connect to the wireless network.
3 - WISP Hotspot :: You can share a wireless network with several devices. (Imagine having several devices accessing one paid hotspot account at the same time.)

But that's just what about every pocket/travel router can do these days. What's special about it? Not everyone wants these features, but many will probably appreciate them.

1 - You can create an extra wireless network (SSID).

Other reviewers detail the three operational modes in which this Zuni device can be used. I needed it to connect my internet phone to an ethernet port- my main router was too far away- so I used it as an internet bridge. The first step in setting it up is to connect the device to the ethernet port in a computer using the included cable. After turning off the computer's wireless and starting up a browser, the Zuni's IP address is typed into the address bar (see instruction sheet), bringing up the setup page. The operational mode is then selected, the desired network selected from the ones found by the Zuni, and the password entered. The Zuni is then disconnected from the computer and reconnected through to your device requiring an ethernet internet connection. Words of advice: For setup, the Lan/Setup port is used for connection to the computer. Afterwards the same port is used to connect the external device to the internet- NOT the Internet port; also the IP address of the Zuni is modified during setup (---.11.-- is changed to ---.22., so use that address to access the Zuni again to make changes- or reset the Zuni using a paper clip in the tiny reset hole and start all over.

I am writing this review not only to rate the product, but to also compliment both Amazon and the Zuni support people. I had trouble connecting the first Zuni received to my computer. The Zuni support person thought perhaps the internal chip was defective. After briefly chatting on-line with Amazon, a new Zuni arrived the next morning. This is another example of the impeccable service I receive from Amazon- why buy from another source? And the Zuni folks were again helpful in figuring out that the Lan/Setup port is finally

Yes folks it's true. I was somewhat skeptical that this portable travel router would work as advertised but I no longer a skeptic. It works as advertised and it is soooo small so it's easy to carry around. I wondered if I would use it once then due to inconveince put it away and not use it again. Not true as I use it all the time for security at hotspots, like Starbucks. You never know who is snooping about so having WISP with WPA2 security is comforting. Support innovation like this and buy this product. I can see it being a benefit at home or the office especially if you don't want it to be seen nor heed an advanced router for streaming video/audio or USB storage hook-up.

Great job Zuni Digital

Part of the function of Amazon user reviews, besides qualitative ratings, is to supplement and refine information about a product. One wonders how so many good products, such as this tiny wireless router, become under-described and thus under-purchased. Let me do this router justice by filling in some significant details.

1. It's a travel router, the size of a jigger, light as a feather.

2. It has two Ethernet ports -- one more than the competition. The additional port is an extremely useful and unique feature. It enables use as a transparent wired-to-wireless bridge. To do so, plug Ethernet into the LAN port, leaving the WAN port unconnected. It will broadcast WiFi using the same subnet (same IP range, you must disable DHCP server) as its Ethernet connection. You can give it the same/different WiFi password as the other access point. I'm not aware of any other travel router that can use an existing subnet. The others create a new subnet.

3. It works everywhere in the world. A dual voltage (100-240v) US adapter is supplied, but it also works off of any USB connection such as on a notebook computer. A USB cable is also supplied.

4. The WAN port, in addition to dynamic DHCP, also offers static DHCP, PPTP and L2TP modes. PPTP and L2TP are required for setting up the router as direct to VPN. I use this feature (not yet tested on this router), to connect to the popular HideMyAss VPN service to impersonate an IP address from another location, useful for receiving NetFlix while traveling abroad.

5. I can confirm this device can WiFi broadcast Internet to at least 15Mbps, probably somewhat higher. I haven't benchmarked an all wired scenario.

6. I'd like to highlight that this router is ipv6 compatible. That's a bit rare for travel routers.
