5.0 out of 5 stars A quick read full of useful information! November 15, 2013
By Uzma
Format:Kindle Edition
What's wonderful about McCarthy's book is that while it is a thin volume, the depth and value of information it provides is immense. If you have a teen or know a parent with a teen (or tween)-- buy them this book! I bought this for my younger sibling (to read with my mother), and they both are so much more the wiser for it. Ignorance is bliss does not apply when you don't know what's going on with your reputation online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who's looking over your shoulder? October 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought this book was excellent for my class project - the pros and cons of online sites. I've implemented some of the privacy or precautions during my on and offline practices, especially a tool to help guide our children dealing with social media websites.

Linda McCarthy's book is an eye opener for any parent with pre-teens or teenagers who socialize through FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram and all the other social media outlets.

A quick read, that takes you through why it's important to protect your online image, how to protect yourself from creeps, how to keep your account and location protected and more.

I highly recommend for parents with teenagers & pre-tweens to buy this book and for you both to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and very educational April 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Linda McCarthy has become an industry expert on security issues for youth over the last few years. In her new book, she points out the key issues we should all be aware of before we start getting involved with the internet. This is also a good read for adults since we all should have a good knowledge of what can do us some long term harm to our internet profiles if we assume the internet is harmless. This book is a good investment for everyone and is a good practical gift for our children.

Full Review:

Have you ever wondered how to be safer on the internet? Digital Drama: Staying Safe While Being Social Online by Linda McCarthy Is a great nonfiction/reference book about being safe, social, and responsible online. This book is obviously targeted to teens, but any internet user could learn something from the 70 page book. Though lacking in easily understood organization, this book was definitely an interesting and educational read.

One reason that this is a great read is the facts. For example, did you know that “2 billion pieces of content are shared every day on Facebook”? (pg. 6), or that “you need at least 15 characters (using a combination of numbers, capitol letters) for important accounts”(pg. 31)? Those are just a few of the many facts scattered throughout the book. The author, Linda McCarthy, embeds these facts throughout the story to give it depth.

Another reason why this is a helpful book are the stories and examples it presents. Whether it is a teen who made a bad choice, or some friends fooling around, the stories engrained throughout the book are educational and informative. Overall, the stories give the book examples of what not to do and how they can be fixed.

In conclusion, I believe this book is an informative, interesting and educational read for anyone doing more on the internet than checking their email. Although the book may get a bit boring at times (like any book), it compensates by providing direct content without any filler. Overall, this is a short book loaded with content suited for any reader.
