Book Description

February 4, 2009 184150209X 978-1841502090
Although the dot-com bubble burst long ago, the interactive media industry is still flush with fresh talent, new ideas, and financial success. Digital Experience Design chronicles the diverse histories and perspectives of people working in the dot-com world alongside an account of the current issues facing the industry. From the perspective of older disciplines such as education, fine art, and cinema, this volume investigates how dot-com practitioners balance the science of usability with abstract factors such as the emotional response that design can provoke. Including in-depth discussion of screen-based design and e-learning, this volume is essential for industry professionals and students alike.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The subject of this book is primarily web design, or the design of online experiences. It aims to provide a number of approaches from different academic and industrial contexts which may provide useful paradigms for the practical implementation of experience design by designers and artists."—Sy Taffel, Bristol University

4.0 out of 5 stars Digital Experience Design: Ideas Industries and Interaction, March 21, 2009
This review is from: Digital Experience Design: Ideas, Industries, Interaction (Hardcover)
Linda has deftly woven together a highly readable and extremely informative collection of narratives, co-authored with various consultants and designers currently working in the field of Experience Design.

What is Experience Design? It is the effective use of digital multimedia technology and integrating other backgrounds such as education, health sciences, cinema, television, fine art, and architecture, to create immersive environments for specific audiences.

Throughout the chapters we are presented with some highly intuitive cross disciplinary methods of design ranging from the translation of Art and Cinematic production into multimedia "experiences", to the exploration of methods for designing effective content aimed towards those with intellectual disabilities. The chapter on harnessing the power of storytelling in film for design presents some brilliant ideas for keeping users engaged, utilising the theoretical concepts of linear and non linear forms of storytelling.

The artist may find practical solutions on how to entice their audience into consideration of abstract concepts and lateral thinking. The web designer can consider incorporating facets of architecture, the importance of sound design and cinematic techniques when designing sensory oriented online experiences.

Linda and Sarah Goldstein's chapter offers plenty of food for thought concerning the design of user generated content sites. Why are some sites more frequently re-visited than others?

Students, web practitioners and Tutors of Interactive Media will find this volume informative, inspirational and a valuable resource for further study.
