Story is harmed by bad editing, proofreading and style, August 14, 2009
This review is from: Digital Force (Paperback)
I purchased Z4AK from the Amazon reviews, and this one at the same time based on those. Big mistake on both. I expect this must be self published.
This book is hampered by an unimaginative respin of an almost cliche near future thriller story. It mostly feels like an extremely poorly written take off of the passible Tom Clancy Net Force. What story there is is hampered by non-existant editing, a total lack of proofreading and odd business letter styling. It's a chore to read.
I'll quote an example part of a paragraph to better explain:
The food was good, something that suprised Duncan, "I thought the government didn't have any money?" This seems okay!" Ares laughed, "It depends on your priorities [...]
The author spends a lot of time telling us things, but not showing us. I immediately thought:
1)Why was the food good?
2)What sort of food was it?
3)Who think's it's OK? Ares, Duncan?
The author does go on in the next page to tell us they eat soup, but how does the character know it's good before they even sit down? Pacing, framing and flow are all mixed up, and makes it hard to follow.
The author misses quotes, seems to use run on sentences and paragraphs, and uses newspaper formatting (right and left justified), it gets hard to follow who is saying what. The author also doesn't indent dialog as shown above.
Sadly, I've read better fan fiction for free. I can't imagine any reputable publishing house would put out something with such continual and obvious punctuation and editing errors - several to a page. It makes it near impossible to read.
