This review is from: Pro Digital Hard Lens Hood For The Canon G11 Digital Camera (Electronics)
I purchased the Pro Digital Hard Lens Hood more for protection of the retractable lens on the G11 than anything else. What is included is a metal Conversion Adapter Tube (2-part), a hard-plastic 58mm Lens Hood and the lens cloth. Items appear well made and durable.
The Conversion adapter is used by removing the trim ring at the base of the G11 lens and attaching the adapter in its place. This adapter is approximately 2-3/8 inches long overall, with a 1-3/8 inch long bayonet mount base and a 3/4 inch extension that can be screwed into the front of the base via its 58mm thread. The provided 58mm Lens Hood works well when screwed into the front of the adapter base alone (without extension,) and does not create any problems with normal use of the camera via the LCD. However, if using the viewfinder, the lower third is obstructed by the attachment. One can also use the adapter base, adapter extension and lens hood together, but this combination produces cut-off of the picture in the corners from full wide angle through about 2X, as observed on the LCD. The large knurled ring which can be seen in the picture of the lens hood acts as a locking ring which can be tightened once the hood is screwed onto the adapter, and allows for rotation of the hood to a proper orientation once mounted. I would have liked to add a 58mm UV filter between the adapter and lens hood to provide even more protection, but the retractable lens cannot extend fully at full telephoto without the adapter extension in place, which produces cutoff at wide angle as noted above. I do like the fact that once attached to the camera, I now have a nice place for my left hand to grab hold of the adapter/hood combination instead of worrying about it getting in the way or damaging the retractable lens assembly in some way. Although making the camera look much bigger when installed, it does provide for better hand-held balance, and looks cool in my opinion. All in all, I like this product and would recommend it.
