Asserting that, a universal harmony unified all things, John Whitney envisioned our future in his book Digital Harmony (1959), writing that:

"The future of Society: the way we communicate, learn and entertain ourselves lay in making pictures that move, images created by cameras and computers and displayed on a computer screen."

By the late nineteen forties, John and his brother Jim Whitney had already set themselves to the task of building our New World of Interactive Multimedia. Thirty years before audiences would be titillated by the strange electronic sounds of the MOOG synthesizer or pass through the "psychedelic Star Gate" of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Whitney's were experimenting with "artificial" music, accompanied by abstract images they created with an analog camera control system.
