This is a great book for a beginner. But if you're already used to getting your hands dirty with home recording on a computer and you have cursed Microsoft and everybody under the sun trying to configure your computer for music, and then succeeded, you won't find much here. It's largely an intellectual exercise and if you wanna know all the technical names and terms for what you're working with it's a nice reference. I was expecting some indepth information on actual recording techniques and tips and this only gives the basics. Plus I do techno. A lot of conventional techniques are for the normal pop or rock recordings. For example one rule of thumb is no effects on the bass. So the style of music you are interested in will also be a factor. The only chapter I found of any real interest was the chapter on mixing, and again it was mainly just intellectual information. Now you can drop the lingo on your friends and sound savvy. =) If you are just starting out and want a manual to guide you and you know pretty much zero about digital music on a home PC, this is the perfect book. If you are already midied up some gear and especially if you have already made some recordings, you are not missing anything.

4.0 out of 5 stars Making Music at Home, December 13, 2000

This book discusses the various types of digital home recording equipment available. It allowed me to get more familiar with my computer and midi keyboard. I also play the guitar so I am learning to pull it all together with my drum machine and make real music! I found the Digital Home Recording book to be a good resource for topics that I am just learning about. There are many tips in the book and some great diagrams that have really helped me learn. My goal is to be able to produce quality CD's on my home computer and this book has taken me a step closer to achieving it. The $16.00 I paid for the book was well worth the information I have gotten out of it.
