5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photographs
There are just beautiful photographs in this book! I have always been interested in infrared photography, but always found it to be too complicated to deal with. Not any more! The author explains his easy to accomplish method of digital infrared photography with his modified cameras. I am going to get a Nikon Coolpix on Ebay just for this purpose.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I had hoped for
The book has some lovely images, and it is true that looking at great images will help improve your skills.

I was disappointed, however, and primarily because the title led me to believe that it was a professional-level book about infrared techniques. In actuality, it gives a cursory introduction to a narrow swath of ideas about infrared. If you are...

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST Infrared Book!, March 29, 2006
By
This review is from: Digital Infrared Photography: Professional Techniques and Images (Paperback)
This is by far the best book on infrared that I have read. The title is misleading because there is a lot of information about infrared film as well as digital infrared. As far as I can tell, this is the only book written on doing infrared with a digital camera.

The history and technical applications of infrared imaging were fascinating and informative. The author really did his research. The sections on "What infrared sees" were very interesting. The effects infrared has on trees, grass, blue skies, etc. are what make infrared distinctive.

The info on wedding and portrait photography have proven to be the most valuable to me because they are the areas that I will make real money with infrared. Nature and landscape photography are wonderful and infrared gives a new look to some familiar scenery, but my wedding and portrait clients pay the bills.

The photographs were just great. I saw many PPA merit quality images throughout the book. Quite inspiring!

There is absolutely something for everyone that has an interest in infrared photography. This book is a can't miss purchase!

When the world of photography went DIGITAL, many of us left Infrared Photography behind thinking that digital imaging would not permit photographing in the Infrared spectrum. NOW we have this new book which we can again use equipment for unusual and beautiful Infrared. Using this manual makes it all possible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!, March 18, 2006
This review is from: Digital Infrared Photography: Professional Techniques and Images (Paperback)
I just recently listened to the author present a photography lecture at my state photography convention and was so inspired that I bought his books. All of the Amherst Media books (I have several) are fairly short and easy to read. The work that the author has done with digital infrared in just amazing! The images are so cool and it looks so easy. I had always been intimidated by infrared photography, but having read this book I know that I will be able to get great pictures. This is a must have book for anybody looking to venture into the creative realm of invisible light.

The book has some lovely images, and it is true that looking at great images will help improve your skills.

I was disappointed, however, and primarily because the title led me to believe that it was a professional-level book about infrared techniques. In actuality, it gives a cursory introduction to a narrow swath of ideas about infrared. If you are interested in using infrared in wedding photography, this is a terrific book, as about half of the images are of weddings.

What I didn't learn was how infrared technique differed from traditional digital. What of histograms readings? Photoshop work? or how to adjust the sometimes odd result from the camera into a beautiful print.

In the slim, 123-page book, the author presents a history of infrared, film photography with infrared, the difference between film and digital, and info about cameras and lenses. This takes you to page 64. The next chapter -- finally -- is "Shooting Techniques," pages 65-78. This chapter has fifteen images associated with it, twelve of which are wedding photographs. The remainder of the book is dedicated to how "infrared sees" and -- you guessed it -- a chapter on weddings. That means, pages 65-78 include the "professional techniques." These are items such as the need for longer exposures when using a filter (duh), and that you can use the manual RGB or B&W setting on the camera (making a correction that otherwise would have been done in Photoshop, and with more control.) His reasoning for shooting in RGB? A wedding couple loved the "edgy look" on the camera's screen. Might there be a technical reason?

So, sadly, I didn't learn anything I hadn't already gleaned from a quick trip around the Internet. On the other hand, if you want to learn about digital infrared wedding photography, this would be a great choice. Took bad that wasn't what was advertised.

This is a great infrared book. Everything that you want to know about digital infrared (and some film infrared info too) is included in this book. The author explains how and why your digital camera should be altered for infrared photography. The photos by the author and other contributers are just amazing. I am now ready to try infrared myself. Great book!!

After reading this book I captured the most beautiful wedding image I could ever imagine...the very first time. What a neat added bonus to put with the rest of your album photos. I am also excited about capturing portraits in the studio thanks to Mr. Rices book. What a neat thing to share with others. Thanks for doing all the homework...we get the A+ from our customers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Wow, April 30, 2006
This review is from: Digital Infrared Photography: Professional Techniques and Images (Paperback)
As mentioned in another of my reviews, I had the pleasure of taking a three day class with this author. To be honest, I really didn't have any interest in the digital black and white before I took this class. When he mentioned he was going to talk about it, I half heartedly stayed to listen. His lecture was basically an overview of this book. The history of infrared is quite fascinating and the author covers it in depth in the beginning. He then explains the differences and similiarities between using infrared film and digital infrared. Part of why I had little interest in digital infrared was my very disappointing results with Kodak infrared film. It was such a pain to use.

The author explains in depth the process of modifying a camera for infrared and why a professional photographer should do this. In his class, he took us outdoors to take photos with one of his modified Coolpix cameras and let everyone try it and see the results. It is so easy and the pictures are so great, just like he shows in the book. The real "wow factor" for me is when he photographed one of the ladies in the class. When we examined the results, we were able to see for ourselves how flattering digital infrared is for portrait photography. There are several great examples of this in the book, but it is nothing like seeing it for yourself instantly.

The book is great. It covers everyhting and more that I was able to get from his photography class. The book will be a great reference guide for me and a source for inspiration and ideas. Buy the book to learn the techniques of digital infrared photography and if you ever get an opportunity to take a class with this author, don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, March 11, 2006
This review is from: Digital Infrared Photography: Professional Techniques and Images (Paperback)
Wow, this book is really something. I had read some very flattering reviews of this book in Shutterbig Magazine last Fall and finally got around to buying it. It is filled with great photographs from several photographers.

The explanation of infrared film and digital infrared is very thorough. I now have a solid understanding of the science behind it all. I am getting ready to convert a camera to infrared. I can't wait!
