Book Description

April 28, 2004 E-Design
As digital media slowly replaces traditional paper formats, knowledge of the digital layout environment becomes essential. Using a methodical approach, this is the first guide of its kind to deal specifically with layouts for screen-based media. Three distinct areas—design, system, and experience—form the basis of a thorough discussion of layout theory and conceptualization. Terms heretofore loosely defined, such as interface, montage, topology, and visual gestures, are given precise meaning and placed into appropriate context. The result is a treasure trove of information that provides designers with one more piece to the digital media puzzle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reads like a Japanese combustion engine instruction manual (in Latin), May 13, 2007

This review is from: Digital Layout for the Internet and Other Media (E-Design) (Paperback)
This is perhaps the most incomprehensible book I've ever come across. One has to simply look at any random page to see that this guy may be a genius but also may be completely insane. His idea of creativity involves 30 steps of detailed analysis followed by breaking one of his 4000 rules. Wow. Serendipity!

I believe if you saw the rough draft of the bit of hieroglyphics it would read like Russell Crowe's garage during one of his psychotic schizophrenic attacks in the film A Beautiful Mind. A flow chart leading to various squared and cubed equations with the parabola of an oyster shell thrown in for good measure.

Unfortunately, I'm really not far off. Please take a look at the book at your local library and tell me, what does this have to do with creating a layout for a website. What do ethos, logos and pathos have in common with wraparound text and picture boxes? I'm not kidding about logos etc. There's a two page spread on it, along with subconscious decision making.

But I probably learned something. Way deep down.

Enjoy!
