With the sd card slot, there is no need to connect this scanner to a computer and therefor I didn't have to deal with any included software. Just left the cd in the box. I used this scanner without a computer to scan my slides. I used aaa batteries for portability, and I also used the included power cord when I was near an oulet to save on money buying batteries. The quality of the scanner is great! The scan of a slide is so fast that at first I didn't even know it scanned. You literally push a button and it's done that second. There is no noise. Once I was done scanning all of my slides, I simply took the sd card out of the scanner and into a card reader to my computer. The files were all in standard jpeg format where any program on your computer could read the files.

First time I ever used a slide scanner so can't compare it to others. But extremely fast scanning, about 2 seconds per slide.
Would have been nice to have slide holder with more than 3 slots but holder was easy to use. My only complaint was the instruction manual- I had trouble knowing exactly what to do and how to switch from screen to screen (eg., save image, delete, transfer to computer) but did figure it all out after a few tries. Use a memory card; faster than using scanner for memory since after about 6 slides scanner memory was full. No problem transferring images to my Apple computer. Yes I would recommend buying it and loved seeing my 40 year old slides on my computer screen.

I got this for my father's Christmas present. He has lots of slides from the 50s and 60s that he has stored away and I thought he'd enjoy easier access to the photos. We set it up and I started scanning the slides. When I went to run slide show, it showed the group that I had originally scanned but not ones that I added later. However, when I took the memory card out of the scanner and put it in a camera, they all showed up. I'm not sure I understand why this is happening. I popped the card back into the scanner to see if all of the images could now be seen but, once again, it only showed me the ones I had originally scanned. I opted for this particular product because it mentioned it could be operated as a stand-alone item without a computer program. I gave it 3 stars because it scanned each slide quite quickly and it was easy to operate. However, I had wanted to buy something that would be hassle-free. This isn't hassle-free. I'm not impressed.

Have old slides from the 60's that I wanted to convert into pictures. Took them to a local photo shop and the pictures were such bad quality that you couldn't tell who they were. Looking for something to do the job myself that didn't break the bank and this is the perfect product. Very quick and easy to use and I like the fact that I didn't have to plug it into my computer. Converted 92 slides into double prints in less then 6 hours; that included fixing the quality of the prints. Would have given it 5 stars but I had to turn some of the slides side ways or it cut the top of the heads off.

Avoid SVP!!,

I purchased a SVP-FS1700 negative and slide scanner for a Christmas present via Amazon.com. The item was defective( it squashed the picture horizontally)and had to be returned. I tried to telephone SVP and and could only leave a message. I received no response. I then tried to email SVP. Again no response. I filed an A to Z claim with Amazon. And after 1 1/2 months of back and forth( and having to spend $13.00 to ship the item back because it has to be insured and a signature for delivery is required) I was told I would receive my refund MINUS A $15.00 RESTOCKING FEE! A restocking fee for a defective item? That's $28.00 I'm in the hole for a defective item. Do yourself a favor and avoid SVP at all cost. The money you might save is not worth all the trouble.

I purchased one of these with great anticipation. It arrived DOA! I had to go directly to "seller" (not Amazon) to get an RMA which I did. It took them forever and only after several prompts to ship a replacement. The replacement could not detect any type of memory card. This makes it useless. Obviously the manufactured has a serious quality control problem that has wasted my time and money! Twice. I hope Amazon drops this vendor/product.

Simple, but low quality and hidden problems.,

I received this item today, and within an hour decided to return it. It is simple to use, which is great, but the quality is pretty bad. Scans of a negative are blurrier and less colorful than prints of the same photo, but the biggest problem is cropping. The lens has a fixed focal length, and it is too long. All 35mm negatives end up with the left and right edges cropped off. Probably 5-10% of each photo is simply missing. I would not advise anyone to purchase this item.

Excellent for what it does. Inexpensive and relatively simply to figure out. Eats batteries. Use the USB to power it. Overall I'm very satisfied.

I ordered the product. For some reason the machine would not read any SD cards no matter what i tried. the instructions are lacking (obviously translated poorly from an Asian language to English). No troubleshooting information. Very frustrating. It appears very cheaply built but solid (i wouldn't try to drop it) and looks like it should get the job done. I liked the idea of the photo 4x6" slot as well as the negatives and kodachrome holders. oh well. they were very good about refunding my money despite the length of time it took. if you have the time to experiment than go for it. i did lose about $12 on postage and handling as you have to send it back priority mail etc. I recommend going to Best Buy, pay a bit more or the same and get a product that you can physically look at and hash out the details with the vendor and bring back for immediate refund if necessary.

I purchased this product to convert slides but was very disappointed with the quality. The initial display image looked pretty good, but after hitting the 'scan' button and it changed to the scanned image it was noticeably blurrier even on the tiny preview screen. There is no user adjustment for this focus problem and after contacting the seller several times and sending sample pictures that had been scanned I got an RMA to send the unit back for repair. It cost almost $20 to ship it back, but if it could be fixed it would still be worth it. Two weeks latter I had to contact to seller again to verify that they had received the machine back and check on the repair status. After a few more weeks they sent back what appeared to be the same unit, but the focus problem hadn't been fixed and now the detent that held the slide magazine in the correct location in the device no longer worked. I got another RMA and spent another $20 to send it back again. After a few more weeks I needed to follow up with the seller again to verify that the item had been received and that they were processing a refund. This turned out to be a waste of $40 in shipping and 6-8 weeks of time and multiple emails. I would strongly recommend staying away from this product.
