Thin, light, and easy to carry.

One very useful feature of the Digital Paper is that you can zoom out to view several pages of a document tiled (4 or 9).

Far better experience as opposed to reading them on LCD screen or printing 100s of pages and scanning them back.

I bought the Digital Paper on Sony website ( the only place where English version can be purchased ).
First of all I would like to express perplexity about how Sony sells the Digital Paper reader. For me, being not a US resident it was quite a problem to order the digital paper device as Sony does not ship world-wide. Moreover, Sony does not send to US forwarding companies. Why? Can't understand what prevents Sony to sell to anyone from any country - people ready to pay, what's the problem, guys?

I had to ask my US friend to receive the package with the product and then resend it to me. My credit card was fine to pay (issued by ukrainian bank).

When the package was finally in my hands , I unpacked it and first saw a sleeve case (for the reader). But it seemed there was no device itself (!) - it appeared it was so thin and light that it seemed like there is only the case in the box and that's it. They should have fooled me ! No, the reader was there and when I first took it I said to myself: WOW.

I was dreaming about such a big reader for a long time. I have Kindle DX and mostly read my pdf-s on it (I have custom firmware so that it makes possible to zoom precisely and trim white space) but it is not sufficient for scanned pdf-s with wide pages.

As for my short experience with the reader.

I have been reading some pdfs a little , navigating some web pages (the reader have built-in webbrowser) and I liked the experience very much. In pdf files text was crisp, sharp and contrast.

Though I should say that if your pdf of poor quality and text in it is gray (poor scan) you will not be able to increase contrast in the reader. You will see it as gray.

A perfect device for my purposes!!!!
Thin, light, and easy to carry.
Many functions are carefully designed for user's convenience. Even if the menus are displayed in Japanese language, there were few difficulties in figuring out and using the device.
It would be perfect (five stars) if its price is lowered.
Anyway, I am really happy with this device, and using it in reading many research papers that I should digest day by day.

Handles PDFs perfectly. Practically went nuts trying to convert PDfs to files that other readers could use! Been using it over a month now and have gone through HUNDREDS of PDFs with no problrms! Cost was $999.00 from the Sony store. Typical e-ink display but very crisp -- can enlarge e.g. maps with no loss of details. Long battery life. The "pen" makes the usual sort of :jagged" lines but response is quick and writing is legible. At this point, the ONLY real improvements I can think of would be color and a separate writing pad.

In particular, a separate writing pad that could be linked to the device so you could make notes as you write and copy and paste, hyperlink, etc would turn it into an IDEAL textbook! Come on Sony! You could DOMINATE the textbook market with this thing!

My only other gripe is no alternative cases are available that I can find. The "sleeve" that comes with it is adequately protective but I would prefer something I could just open like a book.

I've copied all the 100s of PDF documents that I had to review and study.

I've read and commented on 3 documents while watching TV and speaking to my children. Far better experience as opposed to reading them on LCD screen or printing 100s of pages and scanning them back.

This tool has room to grow (Evernote and Dropbox integration as first priority, wireless printing as second).

It's simple, productive, very light and very expensive.

If you are an executive or business owner - buy this, it's a great tool.

Possible alternative is to use Kindle DX with Boogie Board sync.

P.S. calibrate the stylus for perfect hand writing

I have the English language version of this device, and it is a mixed bag.

Pros:

- the device itself is quite elegant and the writing and annotation functionality is OK taking the limitations of the E-Ink display into consideration
- ample internal storage space and extensibility (via SD card slot)
- conserves the environment if used instead of printing out documents

Cons

- Sony has completely neglected the software for this device. There is no decent cloud service where one would synchronize the documents stored on this device with other devices (i.e., your laptop or PC). This would be great, as the user could then actually review the annotations made with the Sony in an easy way.
- The only sync method is via a clunky WebDAV interface. Which average user has the skills to set up a personal WebDAV server? This severely limits the user base. Synching via USB or SD Card is really not a modern method anymore.
- The software doesn't seem to be updated a lot. I've had the device for over a month and haven't received any over-the-air updates.
- The device is mostly PDF-Based so ebooks from other formats (e.g., Kindle) are probably not supported
- Price Tag!! For its capabilities and limited software infrastructure this is a very expensive device at $1200. The value proposition is not acceptable for an average user (i.e., non early-adopter). For $100-$200, however, the device would be an excellent buy.
