1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless Book, January 29, 2004
By John Wheeler (San Bernadino CA) - See all my reviews
This book is worthless. Its step-by-step instructions are filler and fluff. For instance, a three-step instruction on how to select a soundbite takes up a whole page.

Step one: Place cursor over phrase (with picture)
Step two: Hold down mouse button (with picture)
Step three: Release mouse button (with picture)

Ridiculous! It tells how to use plugins, but a good book should provide more theory. When teaching how to use a compressor, it should talk about threshold, attack, release and appropriate settings for vocals vs. drums. This book does nothing of the sort. A COMPLETE waste of money and the worst book I have ever purchased in my life. Shame on the author!

1.0 out of 5 stars digital performer 4 ignite, April 22, 2004
Not Impressed. The information included is self-evident. I am, however, very impressed with the "ableton live 2.0 Power" book. The Ignite series seems to be very, as one other reader mentioned, heavy on the screenshots and blank space. I am under the impression that the author is doing his best to pump out these manuals at a rapid pace and quickly takes screenshots of every obvious command, making for a very pretty, yet trite, picture. I am returning the book and have pre-ordered the digital performer POWER book, which at 400 pages, will hopefully have something written about POLAR, one of the best features yet which is not even mentioned in the book. VST-i plugins are also not mentioned at all. VST plugins are not discussed AT ALL. How is this possible? Is this a training manual? It reminds me of Pangloss, the mentor of Candide, who tells us that in this, the best of all possible worlds, we must accept everything as being for the best. I however, do not agree with this philosophy of Liebnitz and must claim that this work is an insult to my money and my musical intelligence. I am also from Toronto, and I suggest that the author cleans up his act in order to do justice to our fair city! I was looking for erudition, yet there is no translatio studii here, Erasmus would be ashamed.

1.0 out of 5 stars poor, April 3, 2004
By rob (London UK) - See all my reviews
Nothing more than a five page 'quick start' guide that has been shamelessly padded out with gallons of white space and extra large screen shots so as to turn it from a pamphlet into a book. Useless.
