This review is from: Digital Photographer's New Guide to Photoshop Plug-Ins (A Lark Photography Book) (Paperback)
This book offers an introduction to more amazing creative possibilities to some really great plug-ins which are currently on the market. I learned about the plug-ins initially through a course given by one of the authors, but this book takes the reader into the realm of making those images with available plug-ins and the use of the pen tool.
In class, I found the pen tool somewhat challenging. This book repeats what was taught, which for me is important. Plus, there are more plug-ins which can make images even more powerful, of which I knew nothing previously and some of these plug-ins are part of Photoshop and are free. This is a really helpful book and strongly recommended for serious photographers on up.

Guidepost in the plugin-deep forest!,

Nearly a year ago, I ordered this book and read it in one day.
I had informed myself many times on the websites and in magazins about plugins for Photoshop, but it was hard to decide, what the best plug-ins are. There are so many and a lot of them are too expensive for privat users. This Book showed me the categories of plugins in chapter with excellent examples und tips how to use them. The Layout was attractive with many beautifull pictures, chapter by color etc. Also the indication of the price-category of the plug-in was helpfull. After the important introduction of using layermarks Jim Zuckerman and Scott Stulberg guided through lustfull Plugins like Flood, Instant Mirror and professionell Plugins for the photographer for embellishment, phototechnical improvement like colorcasting, sharpening, denoising etc. Also Photoshop plugins e.g. liquify and lightning effects are covered. Bit by bit I learned about the different purposes of the plugings. The main purpose is to optimize your photoprocessing because most of the effects are also in Photoshop itself but not so easy and perfect. The new generation of plugins work with masking-bugs for optimizing and making the process faster. And there are other groups of plugins, that help you to make photoart like Snap Art or Photoframe Pro for applying beautifull frames. I can't handle here all of the other good filter. The fact is, that after reading this helpfull book, I started last year to test, compare and buy most of the plugins, covered in this book. At the moment most of the big plugin companies like Nik Software, Onone Software or Alien Skin Software offer the possibility to test demo versions and have great bundle offers. Thanks a lot to the writers, who gave me a guidepost in the plugin-deep-forrest!! This was for me the best buy last year.

I use a number of plug-ins in PhotoShop, and I thought this would give me some new ideas. The author was very clear in explaining how to use the different effects...and gave me many tips and ideas which I had not yet discovered.
Although this was written in 2009, and plug-in programs are constantly changing...this book takes you through some of the best plug-in software still out there.. I use the NIK products almost exclusively, and was quite pleased, that these effects were explained so well. Even as new programs emerge, the authors introduce the PhotoShop user to the unlimited possibilities in using plug-ins. I think plug-ins are an essential addition to the digital "workshop". The fundamentals for using and appreciating plug-ins was excellent, as explained in this book... and should not be out-dated for quite a long time.
