Digital Photography Basics was originally written sometime in 2008. Although it has been well received and popular, it is just a very basic starting point for absolute beginners. If you - like many readers here - prefer more than just the basics, you'll probably enjoy this book's successor: Digital Photography for the Rest of Us (ASIN B008DGB21O) Released June 20, 2012.

About the Author

Kathy is a skilled professional writer and photographer who has worked online since 1997. As a total novice moving from a point-and-shoot to my first DSLR (a Nikon D3000), I found this book really helpful to get me started. The author does a good job of explaining basic concepts such as aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. While I'm still trying to get my head around these conceptually, and learning how to put them into practice with my camera, I definitely knew more now than I did before.

Her photo samples do a lot to convey the differences in, for example, white balance and how that affects the picture you get based on particular lighting. I never knew to pay attention to the KIND of lighting before so that alone makes a big difference for me already.

It's a quick read, well written, and for $3 a perfect buy.

My only other feedback is that the final section on different kinds of photography, like landscape, portraits, weddings, etc., was not particularly helpful and felt like filler. I would have preferred more information about different kinds of lenses to buy for different kinds of photography or other information I could put to practical use.

The book is well written, but it is an absolute beginners guide that only touches the very basics and scratches a tidbit of the surface of the wast and complex subject digital photography. This is a manual for those who want to understand what they will have to learn more about if they buy a DSLR. Once you've bought one, I dare suggest you'll learn more from the camera's manual.

If you're buying your first camera, taking your first photography class, or experimenting on your own then this is the book for you. This book is an easy read, and easy to follow , plus the author gives some basic insightful info. Maybe sometimes to basic, but for some beginners that's just what they need. Another great photography book for beginners that is wonderful and you should definitely check out is Digital Photography For Beginners: A Guide to Getting Stunning & Professional Digital Photos. From Basics To Dummies & Intermediate Levels it's one of the best so far.

Wanted to brush up on my photography skills as I have a very large project coming up involving documenting/photographing a large number of handmade jewelry pieces. The author does write at a very basic level, but could have elaborated a little more on common problems of shooting action photos, shooting at sunset, etc. But it is meant to be a very basic guide, I think, and it's fairly easy to understand. Illustrated with some photos, as well. Helpful, for the price. Good for someone who knows nothing at all about photography.

The book was short and very basic but was well-written and easy to understand. I have read some of the same topics she covers by other authors and this author seemed to be easier for me to understand. I'd like to read more from her.

This book helped me decide what type of camera i wanted to purchase.  I chose to go back to a p&s.  i like to take good photos, and think i can do that even better now with the tips from this book.  A DSLR  would have just been too much.   l found the most important and useful information, for me, was about iso,shutter speed, and appature.  Like the author said “ A bigger and better camera does not automatically make better pictures.  A good photographer can get good pictures no matter what type of camera they use“.

At this point, I am very new to photography. I bought a coolpix point and shoot camera about a year ago. I have used it off an on but have barely touched the basic functionality. More recently, I have attempted to do more and more with it.

This book really helps frame the most basic concepts such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and white balance. It explains what they are and the relationships they hold. I would recommend this book only for someone who like me, knows nothing about photography outside of pointing and clicking.

If you are interested in doing more than pointing and shooting, then this is a must buy book. It is not that expensive and will give you the basic tools. I am looking for other books now as this book really helped ignite a love for photography.
