4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for us "technically impaired" folks, January 16, 2009
This review is from: Digital Photography For Dummies, DVD + Book Bundle (Paperback)
The new Dummies book and DVD on digital cameras and photography is excellent for those of us who are not professionals. The book has color photos which truly enhances a volume on color photography. It is well organized and provides the information in an easily understandable way without the "cutesy" comments I find so annoying in many of the Dummies books. I found I could move easily between the book, the DVD, and my camera with its manual so that I could actually practice the steps being taught. My learning style requires me to read material that is technical (like aperture settings) and then practice tasks I will need to use (like transferring photos to the computer and editing them). The combination of the book and DVD enabled me to use the learning method best for me at each juncture. I also found that one was re-enforcing the other so I was learning faster. My favorite part of the DVD was the section on editing the photos. I feel confident that I can now tackle that project, something I have avoided because the software intimidated me.

The book and DVD, while a bundled set, are really not connected in any way, except by topic. I expected and would have liked some cross referencing although I was able to do that fairly easily on my own. (Would have been 5 stars if that connection was there). The bundled set is definitely a valuable addition to my library and I anticipate carrying the book with me for reference for awhile until I become more comfortable with the tips and tricks to make my pictures more professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy Little Book, December 11, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Digital Photography For Dummies, DVD + Book Bundle (Paperback)
This book is easy and fun to read. Plus the publisher did a great job creating the book--the text, photos, and cartoons are all "user friendly." The color photos and design of the book are especially pleasing. The book's small size makes it handy to take on hikes, car trips, etc. Explanations about cameras and photographs are easy to follow and clearly written. I especially enjoyed the photos, which show the author's love of nature and the Southwest. I really enjoyed this book and have recommended it to many others, as well as purchased three more copies for friends. This book ought to also be offered in Costco stores nationwide, as well as craft stores where people do scrapbooking and other craft projects. Its reasonable price (on Amazon at least) and useful tips make it a superb bargain!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for new photographers, January 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Digital Photography For Dummies, DVD + Book Bundle (Paperback)
The DVD is pretty sparse, with only approximately 1 hour of material. It does not go much in depth, so this really is just an Overview type book/dvd.

A 'dummies' book really is just an overview, after all. And this is for ALL digital photography, not DSLRs specific. So, don't expect too much.

lost 1 star, since other 'dummies' books I have, work great as a quick reference... this one doesn't quite measure up because it doesn't cover as much in depth. For instance, more information about setting aperture would have been nice, beyond the mechanics of pushing this button and twisting that dial, such as what/when to use which aperture setting.
