Editorial Reviews

Video Librarian, September/October, 2005

... jam-packed-with-info photography course... Well organized and nicely paced, this is highly recommended.

Product Description

Learn the basics of digital photography in Jim Miotke's new DVD, "Digital Photography Unleashed: Capturing Wildly Great Photos".

This jam-packed DVD is over 2 hours long. Each of the four segments is just under a half hour, and helpful bonus materials are included as well. The four segments are:

• Learning the Basics (with Andy the Mountain Lion)

• Day at the Ranch (where we photograph horses, cowboys, branding, and more)

• Mastering Further Techniques (with a variety of wildlife models)

• Exploring Light and Shutter Speed (in Yosemite Valley)

Each segment has a variety of tips and techniques sprinkled throughout.

While enjoying an adventure photographing animals near Yosemite, California, you will:

• Learn to see and appreciate light

• Master the "Exposure Triangle"

• Know how to choose the best ISO, shutter speed, and f-number

• Understand file formats such as JPEG and Raw

• Select the right white balance setting

• Compose with the Rule of Thirds

• Digital photograph any subject, whether it is your child, a scenic, a close up flower, your favorite pet, your friends and family, and more...

This exciting and dramatic DVD is fun to watch even for non-photography enthusiasts. With the help of Triple "D", we explore the universal tips and techniques while photographing wildlife models, cowboys, colorful horses, and Yosemite Valley.

Bonus materials include a Buyer's Guide, a collection of tips for easy reference, and interviews with the Triple "D" staff and ranchers who put on the wildlife photo shoot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Did I get the same copy as you?, February 22, 2008
By R. Allocco (boston mass) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ok I got this because every one gave it a 4-5 star. Said it was jam packed with info, and exciting.... well I must have received a different version. it was more like watching ANIMAL PLANET with a little bit of camera info tossed in instead of a training video on photography with animals for models. Ya he takes you out on a shoot, with a class of 15-20 people. So everyone is yelling and gabbing trying to get the animals to look their way as trainers parade them by the cameras trying to get tath perfect shot. At the same time the teacher is given you tid bits on how to shoot the scene. They do this with several different animals from large cats to cows and horses. I had to keep rewinding to hear what he was saying cuz I was getting to distracted by all the buzz in the background, the teacher himself would get side tracked by the same buzz. and have to stumble thru what he was telling you. if you don't beleive me watch the bloopes at the the end.
at the very end of the DVD he dose a TOP 10 Review of the whole DVD, this recaps all that he explained during the shoots, without all the distraction. it was to the point and did offer some good info. So unless you prefer to watch 20 mins of a cowboy chasing a herd back n forth, and then 15 mins of a trainer tossing meat to a cat trying to get it to jump from one rock to another. and then another 15 min of another animal and so on, Then skip to the last 10 mins to learn what you bought the DVD for, then later when you feel like watching ANIMAL PLANET then you can go back and watch the rest. or better yet
if you want a good training DVD, get BRYAN PETERSON'S (THE PERFECT PICTURE) he tells you how to use your camera and different lenses and explains in easy to follow direction when to use what Fstop, iso and shutter speed, and gives before and after shots so you can see clearly why.

4.0 out of 5 stars NON-STOP TIPS...GOES ON FOREVER AND EVER AND..., August 11, 2006
I really like this DVD. I watched it all the way through on the first viewing, but will have to go back again and again. There's just so much stuff in there, fast paced and never boring; and everytime it came to an end of a section, I got up to turn it off, only to be greeted with more. I picked-up several good tips that were worth the price of admission; not to mention the dozens and dozens more that I will have to go back and evaluate to see if they're for me. A convivial host, I only wish he spent more time on landscape, and less time on Pumas. Still was very worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice..., August 7, 2006
As an intermediate photographer I found this dvd very enjoyable. Its packed with useful information, geared primarily towards the beginner to intermediate photograper. Jim keeps the terminology very simple and his instructions are easy to follow and understand. He covers many aspects of Photography from composition, lighting, locations, as well as camera functions, etc. And he doesn't overwhelm you with technical jargon.
All in all, a nice dvd for anyone looking to improve their photography. And even for advanced photographers, it could serve as a nice refresher course. I would also recommend his book 'The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Photography' as many of the subjects and pictures from the dvd are included in more detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner, but not for intermediate-level photographers.
Great video for beginners or digital newcomers but not so if you have some experience already as you will find it slow to follow.
