Actually, not a bad guidebook, January 17, 2011
This review is from: Digital Photography Workshops: Portraits: A Unique Course in a Book Taking You from Beginner to Expert (Paperback)
After reading the previous reviewers' comments, I reread the book. I can honestly say that I see where she was coming from; however, the book is not all that bad.
I agree there should have been more diversity in age, sex, race, etc, you frankly can't make any book perfect. Monte Zucker's book was wonderful, but applying some of the things in it require a bit more info. Steve Sint's book,
Digital Portrait Photography: Art, Business & Style (A Lark Photography Book) is probably the closest thing to perfect that I have seen, but it is a bit intimidating for newbies.
I believe this little book from Evans is a good guide for newbies learning portraiture, especially if you invest in a used copy. Then, step up your game with Steve Sint's marvelous book. You can't go wrong having both, and you WILL lean a lot from both!
And, as a reminder, be sure to check around for a local camera club! Most members are perfectly willing to share their knowledge and experience...and that is often the best learning tool of all!

Poor Excuse for a Portrait Instruction Book, February 6, 2007
This review is from: Digital Photography Workshops: Portraits: A Unique Course in a Book Taking You from Beginner to Expert (Paperback)
I bought this book and after reading it, I kept wondering what it was about it that bothered me. It finally occured to me that nearly every single picture in this book shows beautiful people in their early to mid twenties. There are only a handful of people who are any older. What good is this to anyone who is taking portraits of real people? It's easy to make a good portrait of attractive young people. The real challenge is to make a nice portrait of someone who is older. That's where real talent shows through. So unless you plan on only photographing beautiful young people, it's best to pass this one by.
