This book was very helpful for me! I am practically new to photography and I am, well, a dummy when it comes to portraits!

I think its a really good book. Exactly what I expected. There was a balance between the text and the illustrations.

I know its part of the "...for Dummies" series, but its a bit too simplistic. Anyone with a smattering of experience with a prosumer DSLR already knows about 90% of what is in this book. If you just picked up a point and shoot camera for the first time, it has great information. Its probably my fault for expecting a bit more depth--what a dummy I was for buying this book!

Almost exactly what I was looking for,

I picked up this book in order to learn to take portraits with my Nikon D50. Like most users, I usually rely on the preset modes, and wanted to learn to step up a notch. This book has several pieces of useful information. I particularly appreciated the lighting layouts showing how the lights were placed for a portrait. Some of those even showed the specific effect of each light, which is exactly what a new portrait photographer needs to know. I did find that the repeated comment on lens selection and aperture setting got a little annoying after the 15th or 20th time (maybe a slight exaggeration, maybe not. I didn't count exactly.) The section on post processing the image really showed the importance of this skill, one I thought could be avoided by taking a good picture to start with. I now realize I am going to have to work on this too.Overall, this book almost nailed what I was looking for. I learned enough to get started with my own experimentation and feel that I have a direction to start of in, and an idea of where to go next.

Good book for the basic beginner digital photographer. I would say that with the tidbits present it might even be good for the prosumer. Not a bad read as most dummies books are not. I would recommend if you are new to digital world.
