"Digital Signal Processing: A Computer-Based Approach" is intended for a two-semester course on digital signal processing for seniors or first-year graduate students. Based on user feedback, a number of new topics have been added to the second edition, while some excess topics from the first edition have been removed. The author has taken great care to organize the chapters more logically by reordering the sections within chapters. More worked-out examples have also been included. The book contains more than 500 problems and 150 MATLAB exercises.

New topics in the second edition include: finite-dimensional discrete-time systems, correlation of signals, inverse systems, system identification, matched filter, design of analog and IIR digital highpass, bandpass and bandstop filters, more on FIR filters, spectral analysis of random signals and sparse antenna array design.

A corrected version of the main text is now packaged with Digital Signal Processing Laboratory Using MATLAB, which is intended for a computer-based DSP laboratory course that supplements a lecture course on Digital Signal Processing.

The lab book includes 11 laboratory exercises, with each exercise containing a number of projects to be carried out on a computer. The book assumes that the reader has no background in MATLAB and teaches the reader, through tested programs in the first half of the book, the basics of this powerful language in solving important problems in signal processing. In the second half of the book, the student is asked to write the necessary MATLAB programs to carry out the projects.

About the Author

Sanjit Mitra, Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley. Professor Mitra transferred to UCSB in July 1977 after 10 years at UC Davis. He obtained his B.Sc. with honors in Physics (1953) and the M.Sc. (Tech.) in Radio Physics and Electronics (1956) in India. He then obtained his M.S. (1960) and Ph.D. (1962) in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley. He has published over 600 papers in the areas of analog and digital signal processing, and image processing. He has also authored and co-authored twelve books, and holds five patents. Dr. Mitra has served IEEE in various capacities including service as the President of the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society in 1986, and has held visiting appointments in Australia, Austria, Finland, India, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I bought this book as it was a required book at the University. I found that it is no better then any other introductory book on DSP such as the one by Boaz Porat. Moreover, you could buy two other DSP books at the same price.
Regarding the content,I have to say that it does cover all the topics needed in an introductory DSP course and coupled with the MATLAB drills it will teach you step by step how to implement your DSP theory into practice using MATLAB.

Had it not been for the price, I would have given it 4 stars but no more than that.

I am a TA at a University, My class is Digital Signal Processing, So I read many DSP books ever,(except Understanding Digital Signal Processing, which is recommended by many people, but I have no opportunity to read it). Though Oppenheim is classic, it is a bit hard for undergraduate student to understand. With the help of Matlab. it become more easier!
Though this book is not the best one in the field of DSP, but it is the best text book!
I am honoured to be the translator of this book. The Chinese Version will be publised in 2004.
I have to admit that there are still many errors of this book(many are printed errors).
