"Many codes are given in this book. This book will be much help for students to practice and write their own codes in DSP."

"I find that this book meets an important need in the academic community. Although the authors indicate that this is not a "textbook" in the classical sense, they do provide enough theoretical material to tempt professors to use this book exclusively for their classes."

About the Author

Vinay K. Ingle is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University. He received his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1981. He has broad research experience and has taught courses on topics including signal and image processing, stochastic processes, and estimation theory. Professor Ingle is coauthor of the books: DSP Laboratory Using the ADSP-2181 Microprocessor (Prentice-Hall, 1991), Discrete Systems Laboratory (Brooks-Cole, 2000), and Statistical and Adaptive Signal proc-essing (Artech House, 2005).

John Proakis is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego and a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. He was a faculty member at Northeastern University from 1969 through 1998 and held the following academic positions: Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, 1969-1976; Professor of Electrical Engineering, 1976-1998; Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering, 1982-1984; Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, 1984-1997. His professional experience and interests are in the general areas of digital communications and digital signal processing. He is the co-author of several books including Digital Communications (2008, 5th ed.), Introduction to Digital Signal Processing (2007, 4th ed.); Digital Signal Processing Laboratory (1991); Advanced Digital Signal Processing (1992); Digital Processing of Speech Signals (2000); Communication Systems Engineering, (2002, 2nd ed.); Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB V.4 (2010, 3rd ed.); Contemporary Communication Systems Using MATLAB (2004, 2nd ed.); Algorithms for Statistical Signal Processing (2002); Fundamentals of Communication Systems (2005).

I'm an engineer taking a graduate course in DSP using Digital Signal Processing Priciples, Algorithms, and Applications as the textbook. I find that working with concrete MATLAB examples in this companion book very helpful. The only complaint is the material is a bit dated, written for MATLAB 5 instead of MATLAB 2013 so some of the functions used in this book, all of them are available on the Mathworks website, have been replaced with built-in MATLAB functions which offer more features and superior performance.

The content is well-written and the exercises are easy to follow. This book could be very beneficial to somebody who wants some hands-on DSP experience.

I think that where the book falls short is that it fails to include some of the Matlab features that are truly useful for DSP engineers. The authors do not even mention my all-time favorite Matlab DSP feature: fdatool. I think that overall, the book is good for somebody who is new to DSP programming with Matlab, but some simple updates to this book could elevate it to the definitive guide for DSP M&S with Matlab.

A nice introduction to many DSP concepts, even if you do not use Matlab. I found the discussions of Z-transforms and LTI systems particularly helpful. If you are familiar with Matlab, you get the added bonus of example algorithms.
