Product Description

The ds-101a uses a 3.5mm audio jack known as a trs (tip ring and sleeve) connector. This type of connector is used almost universally for portable equipment such as media / music players portable cd and dvd players radios etc. It is also common on multi-media mobile phones to allow users to plug in legacy headphones to listen to their music.Whilst the 3.5mm audio connector is a standard there are some differences in configuration that can cause compatibility issues between different devices. Typically these relate to the number of rings (or poles) and what these poles are used for.

Previously I had tried using low-quality ear-bugs on a train. Arriving to a silent home allowed me to see just how loud I'd set the volume to counteract a train, so I gave up on using ear-buds on a train. This is my second attempt at such a feat and the results are mixed:

The good:
Price: At only $22 + $0 S&H, these are some of the cheapest noise-canceling headphones available.
Portability: The clip is a bit bigger than an AA battery. This is an impressive level of portability for noise-cancelling headphones; it's not that much less convenient to use than generic ear-buds.
Battery: With such a low price, it's nice that it is rechargeable. The use of a standard usb charger ensures compatibility with plenty of chargers. A computer USB port can suffice in a pinch.
The Pouch: It comes with a little pouch. Nothing spectacular, but it was a nice extra that was appreciated.

The bad:
Noise-canceling: The noise-canceling works, but the effectiveness varies. Sometimes if the ear-buds are angled improperly within your ear, the noise-canceling effect is mostly destroyed.
Hissing: As is common among noise-canceling headphones, there is a background hissing sound. This sound is annoying, and many people find it makes their ears feel incredibly uncomfortable. This is a disaster if you're using the headphones purely for noise-canceling, but if you're also using them to listen to something it is mostly ignorable.
Comfort: As is common with cheap ear-buds, these headphones use a thin plastic bubble (includes 3 sizes). This isn't particularly comfortable, though it's easy to ignore if you're not using the ear-buds for hours on end.
Noise-reducing: The ear-buds make no attempt to provide passive noise reduction.

-Cancelation and Isolation:
I bought this expecting it to be mediocre. But instead I found it to be amazing, and especially effective against lower frequencies. My roommate's booming bass 90% gone, lawnmower is 90% gone, ambient sound and music in food courts, or cafes are reduced by at least 60%. It is not particularly effective against voices with a higher pitch, but the effectiveness can be increased significantly by buying sound isolating triple flange ear bud tip replacements on amazon for 5$ or less.

-Battery life is very good and is rechargeable.

-Decent build quality.

-Great Price.

-Conclusion:
It's definitely no Bose, but it comes relatively close for something so much cheaper.
Hissing is an issue if you aren't playing music, but is way better than background noise.
Sound quality in music playback is average, but not bad.

Cancellation: 8.5/10, Isolation: 6/10, Build Quality: 7/10, Sound Quality: 7.5/10, Battery Life: 8/10, Price 10/10

Overall : 8.5/10 (Based on all above with more weight on Cancellation, Sound Quality, and Battery Life.

These were marked for $17, and there were the same model for twice price if you look around. These are no Klipsch, but they do sound good for budget needs. I was uncertain if the rechargeable battery would be a problem, but most people will be able to use their phone charger micro usb. The noise cancelling does work.

I used these on two ~5 hour flights (round trip) and they worked amazingly well. Previously, I had sworn by my over-the-ears Sony noise cancelling headphones but they are quite large on your head and in your travel bag, they have no pause/answer button (or microphone), and they are much more expensive. I like in-the-ear (buds) so I wanted to try these. Switching them off mid-flight, I could hardly believe how loud the airplane cabin is (how do people not suffer hearing damage?). They work also for cancelling some traffic noise if you are walking, but the effect is not so dramatic.

After 5 hours continuously in my ears, they were a little uncomfortable but at this price, performance, and convenience, I give them 5 stars anyway. A steal.

I use these with my iPod on the way to work. They really cut down the ambient noise on the bus and allow me to listen to my iPod at a lower volume. Don't expect total elimination of ambient noise. They work better than expected.

Planning on taking these ton a flight to Europe , They do a great job with wind noise and traffic. On My Motorcycle they are unbelievable I almost cannot hear the engine. Wish they had a little lower profile though.

I got these headphones after reading through tons of reviews on various in-ear noise cancelling headphones. These seemed like the highest rated for the most reasonable price. They are worthless to me, though. The ear pieces are huge and don't fit in my ears. The noise cancelling is ok if I actively press them in my ears, but it's painful and unpractical. The design is poor--the heavy portion with the control switch is too close to the earbuds. Since there is so little slack, there is nowhere to clip the box. It dangles in the air and gravity inevitably causes both earbuds to fall out of your ears.

So,
1) poor fitting/non conforming earbuds
2) so-so noise cancelling
3) poor design that causes earbuds to constantly pull on ears and inevitably yanks the earbuds right out

I would not recommend these to anyone unless you have big ear canals.
