Book Description

May 26, 2000 0130856347 978-0130856340 Book & CD
For an introduction to digital systems in two- and four-year programs in technology, engineering, and computer science. While a background in basic electronics is helpful, the majority of the material requires no electronics training.Tocci and Widmer use a block diagram approach to basic logic operations, to enable students to have a firm understanding of logic principles before they study the electrical characteristics of the logic ICs. For each new device or circuit, the authors describe the principle of the operation, give thorough examples, and then show its actual application.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Tocci uses a block diagram approach to basic logic operations, so students have a firm understanding of logic principles before they study the electrical characteristics of the logic ICs. For each new device or circuit, Tocci describes the principle of the operation, gives thorough examples, and then shows its actual application. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Authors Tocci and Widmer have again created a digital electronics text with a wide variety of tools and topics that provides the necessary foundation in digital electronics that students need for future studies.

NEW! The eighth edition features more coverage of programmable logic devices (PLDs). This technology is rapidly replacing the use of conventional small- and medium-scale ICs in modern digital systems. Interspersed throughout the text where appropriate, this PLD coverage offers students an alternative means of implementing digital logic circuits, from the simplest gates to complex systems.

NEW! Each text is packaged with two free CD-ROMs. The first CD-ROM contains the entire library of Texas Instruments Logic Data Sheets, including all TTL series, CMOS, and bus interface parts. The second CD-ROM contains:

  • Circuits from the text rendered in both Electronics Workbench™ and CircuitMaker ® software programs. Students with access to Electronics Workbench software can open and work interactively with the Electronics Workbench circuit files to increase their understanding of concepts and to prepare for laboratory activities. Free CircuitMaker Student Version software is included on the CD-ROM, enabling students to access the CircuitMaker files.
  • A limited-compile demonstration version of the PAL Expert CUPL language compiler from Logical Devices, Inc.

UPDATED! Topics that apply to digital signal processing (DSP), a very rapidly advancing technology in electronics, have been expanded and improved.

UPDATED! Digital logic technology coverage and terms often encountered in personal computer literature have been updated and improved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good textbook. Getting better and better, December 7, 2000
From the basis of binary numbers to an introduction to digital computers, this book covers (with a lot of figures, examples, review questions and problems) logic gates, FFs (flip-flops), combinational circuits, way of reading datasheets, counters, D/A and A/D converters, memories, PLAs, PLDs, and so on.

I have used editions 2nd and 6th (ISBN 0133093867), and also browsed Ed. 7th, and some information gets updated as fundamentals' explanation is somehow improved. Moreover, Ed. 7th also includes a CD with simulation software and datasheets.

Be careful not to take the Study Guide instead of the textbook. I've made such a mistake in Amazon.

This review is from: Digital Systems: Principles and Applications (8th Edition) (Hardcover)
This is the book for you. I am a 32 year old U.S. Army leader. I instruct at the U.S. Army Signal Center. I have no time for traditional education. This book is a masterful work and well suited for anyone who desires an intimate knowledge of digital systems, but has no prior background. If you don't have time
to take a traditional college course. GET THIS BOOK! Better than any classroom instruction this book will give you all the fundamentals in a clear and concise manner. Wonderful book.

Thank you Mr Tocci, for a job very well done!
